John Boyd, a beloved fixture in the lives of those who knew him, passed away at the age of 81 on October 17, 2025, in Dayton, Ohio. Born on July 20, 1944, in Yellow Springs, Ohio, John became known for his cantankerous, yet lovably argumentative personality. While he might have stirred the pot in conversation, it was clear to all that deep down, he had a heart of gold, devoted uncompromisingly to his family, particularly to his cherished wife Peggy, who predeceased him.
John's life was punctuated by his service in the United States Army during Vietnam, a testament to his willingness to serve and protect. John enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping, shooting, and enjoying a cold beer. He thrived on the thrill of the great outdoors, finding solace and joy away from the hustle and bustle of daily life.
Those who had the pleasure of calling him dad know well the strength of his character. John was a great dad to his son, Chris Boyd, providing guidance, a listening ear, and an abundance of love. His greatest joy came from being a granddad to Amber Lynn Boyd, Jeffrey Reed, and Elizabeth Reed. John’s generosity knew no bounds, and his grandchildren are all better for having had such an involved and giving figure in their lives.
John also leaves behind a loving family network, including his niece, Holly Reed, and his nephews, Tim Ankaney and Tom Dean, who will forever carry fond memories of their time spent with him.
He joins his beloved wife Peggy Ann Boyd in eternal rest, along with his parents Elza and Hazel Boyd, and his siblings Wilma, Jane, Ruby, Mary, Mike, and Paul. The legacy of his vibrant personality and unwavering love for his family will long be remembered by everyone who was lucky enough to know him.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, October 25, 2025 from 12:30-1:30pm at the Newcomer North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Rd., Dayton, Ohio 45424. The service will follow at 1:30pm.
