Joann L. Lucas, a lifelong resident of Dayton, Ohio, passed away on July 1, 2026, in her hometown. Born on September 9, 1929, in Dayton, Joann’s life was a testament to dedication, compassion, and service to her family and community.

Joann’s early years were spent in the city that would remain her home throughout her life. She attended Lincoln Elementary before moving on to Wilbur Wright High School. Further distinguishing her academic path, she completed studies at the esteemed Chaminade Julienne in 1952, with a focus on clerical duties. These formative experiences served as the foundation for both her professional endeavors and her role within her family.

Joann began her career at Wright Patterson Logistic Command, a significant local institution. She later took on the vital responsibilities of a homemaker, ensuring her household was a place of warmth and stability. Afterward, she dedicated many years of service to Dayton Public Schools until her retirement, impacting countless lives with her steadfast commitment and work ethic.

Beyond her professional life, Joann was known for her deep love of the outdoors and her unwavering tendency to place others—especially her family—above herself. Family was always central to Joann’s life, and this devotion was evident in her relationships and daily actions.

She is survived by her devoted children: James Lucas, Joann Simon, Jennifer Burns, and Jesse Lucas. She leaves a lasting legacy for her grandchildren: Iggy Lucas, Devan Perkins, Sheri Shultz, Abbey Simon, Jesse Simon, Billy Simon, Crystal Graham, Joshua Lucas, Michael Graham, David Lucas, River Covey, Briana Lucas, and many beloved spouses of family and friends including Fiona Lucas, Eric Graham, Megan Lucas, and Kaila Covey. Joann’s influence also continues in her great-grandchildren: Trista, Arthur, Tillie, Cameron, Alexis, Kaylin, Brydon, Summer, Misty, Deicide, Jesse, Iggy, Trent, and Dayton; and numerous extended family members. 

Joann was preceded in death by her father, Russell E. Sizemore; her mother, Marphans G. (Patton) Sizemore; her son, Jerald Randolph Lucas; her sister, Catherine Louise Morris; and 7 dear friends, affectionally known as the me-moes.

Family and friends are invited to pay their respects at a visitation to be held on July 10, 2026, from 12:00 to 1:00 p.m. at Woodland Cemetery, Woodland Avenue, Dayton, OH 45409. The funeral service will follow at 1:00 p.m. with burial to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the family to assist with funeral expenses. 

Joann L. Lucas’s memory will be cherished by all who knew her and whose lives she touched with her kindness, dedication, and unwavering support. Her legacy endures in the love and values she instilled within her family and community.
