Jim Courtney, affectionately known as “Jimbob”, age 65, passed away peacefully at home on Monday, January 5, 2026. He was born on June 9, 1960 in Saranac Lake, New York, the son of James E. and Geneva (Perras) Courtney.
Jim was a Ford Certified Master Mechanic and ASE Certified Master Automotive Mechanic who also performed valued work for stock car racing driver Bill Elliott. He later traveled the country as a Robotics & Automation Control Technology Field Manager for HK Systems, GEMS Mechanical Systems and other automation installers. While known for his professional mechanical skills, his favorite work was in his own garage where he resolved small engine problems for family, neighbors and friends. He was a “Jim of all trades”.
Jim is survived by his devoted life partner, Louise Palmer; and his son, Brian Gardner (Jamilyn) of New York. He was the proud grandfather of Autumn and Gunner Gardner.
He is also survived by stepdaughters, whom he loved as his own: Libby Powers (Jimmy), Angie Hoersting (Steve), Millie Penrod(Cecil Day) and Rose Hoersting. His legacy continues through his step-grandchildren: Andy, Kyle, Sam and Ben Pidgeon (Delaney); Owen Hoersting; Joshua Stilabower; Maggie and MakenzieEldridge and Maddie Hoersting. He will also be missed by his favorite bunny, Panda.
Jim is survived by siblings: Randy Courtney (Diane Stamm); Jeanette Barden (Brian); Timothy Courtney; Alice Sofield (Rick); Tammy Landerway (Frank), along with many loving nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Judy Vercek, Lynne Smith and his niece, Kristie Smith.
New York funeral arrangements are in care of the Fortune-Keough Funeral Home of Saranac Lake, to include a graveside service to be announced at a later date.
A Celebration of Life will be held locally at the discretion of the family.
