Listen to Obituary

Jerry Wayne Koons, known affectionately as “Koondog” by his high school friends, peacefully passed away at his home in Miamisburg, Ohio, on June 5, 2026, after a brief battle with esophageal cancer. Born on December 17, 1950, in Homer Township, Morgan County, Ohio, Jerry’s life was marked by dedication, humor, and an unwavering commitment to family.

Jerry’s journey began in southeastern Ohio where he graduated from Glouster High School in 1969. There, he participated proudly on the football and baseball teams. His passion for learning led him to Hocking Technical College, where he earned a degree in Ceramic Engineering Technology in June 1976. Never ceasing in his pursuit of knowledge, he continued his education at Wright State University, achieving a Bachelor's Degree in Business on August 19, 1993. Education held a special place in Jerry’s heart, a value he deeply instilled in his daughters.

Jerry forged a distinguished career beginning in 1980 when he joined Mound Laboratories. He worked in the Advanced Devices group, supervising small parts manufacturing for detonator components until 2002. As production programs came to a close, he transitioned to serve as Finance Manager for a decommissioning project team, exemplifying adaptability and leadership throughout his professional life.

Beyond his work, Jerry’s zest for life was evident. In his younger days, he was a member of Deepwood, a small rock band where he lent his talents as a singer and keyboard player entertaining local audiences. He loved golf and bowling, yet his true joy sprang from supporting his favorite sports teams: the Cincinnati Reds, the Cincinnati Bengals, and The Ohio State Buckeyes. Alongside his beloved wife, Libby, with whom he shared 56 years of marriage since their wedding on September 9, 1970, Jerry traveled widely, sharing countless cherished memories. His grandchildren were his pride and joy, and he loved attending their sporting events and dance recitals.

Jerry was a man of remarkable character — endowed with an amazing sense of humor, a creative vocabulary, and a deeply sensitive nature that made him the perfect “girl dad.” Punctual to a fault, Jerry preferred to arrive an hour early rather than a minute late, embodying respect and dependability in all things. Above all, he loved with his whole heart and held his family as his proudest accomplishment, delighting in the births and growth of his grandchildren.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Libby Koons; daughters Jessica (Matthew) Stafford and Amanda Warren; grandchildren Maxwell and Benjamin Stafford (Breanna Duncan), Grace, Charlotte, Lilian, and Stella Warren; siblings Duane (Pam) Koons, Paula (Curt) Bailey, Steve (Betsy) Koons; Uncle Robert (Rosemary) Koons; along with numerous extended family and friends. He was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Paul and Norma Koons, and brother Larry Koons.

Jerry Wayne Koons leaves behind a legacy of love, dedication, and sincerity that will forever resonate with all who had the privilege of knowing him. His life story is a testament to the profound impact one man can have through commitment to family, work, and community. He will be deeply missed, fondly remembered, and eternally cherished.
