Listen to Obituary

Jean Carolyn Back (maiden name; Bryan) passed away peacefully at her home in Dayton, Ohio, on August 22, 2026, surrounded by the love and presence of her family. Born on August 3, 1936, in Betsy Layne, Kentucky, Jean’s life was a tapestry woven with devotion, warmth, and an abiding generosity of spirit.

Jean grew up in The Plains near Athens, Ohio, where the earliest seeds of her kindness and strength took root. Those who knew her remember a woman of effortless grace and an open heart, who found joy in the simplest pleasures—especially when they brought her loved ones close. She lived most fully whenever her family was gathered together, cherishing the laughter and connection of each occasion.

Her proudest accomplishment was, without hesitation, her family. As a dedicated homemaker, Jean poured her love into every meal, every garden flower, and every heartfelt embrace. The kitchen table was always a place of comfort; here, she ensured that everyone felt special, loved, and well fed. Her greatest delight was in loving her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, of whom there are many. She celebrated their milestones, nurtured their dreams, and offered them the unwavering security of her encouragement.

Jean’s interests blossomed as vibrantly as the gardens she tended. Whether cheering for Ohio State Football and Basketball, painting with creative flourish, or following the excitement of Nascar, she pursued her passions with contagious enthusiasm. Her gardens bloomed, not just from her skilled hands, but from her reverent attention to nature’s quiet miracles.

Jean is survived by her six children: Michael Back, Melinda Jones, Todd (Heather) Back, Martin “Ray” (Fanery) Back, Melissa Nichols, and Melanie Back. Each family member, as well as her wide and loving circle of grandchildren and great-grandchildren, carries forward memories of her unshakeable love, gentle wisdom, and the sense of belonging she spun so naturally around those she cherished.

She was predeceased by her beloved husband Charles Back, as well as her father Millard Bryan, her mother Violet Bryan, sisters Patsy Morris and Bette Dresher, and brothers Millard, Bill, Bob, and Jim Bryan.

To honor Jean’s life, a visitation will be held on Thursday, August 27, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home, North Dayton, 4104 Needmore Rd, Dayton, OH. Burial will take place the following day on Friday, August 28, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. at Alexander Cemetery, 2150 Hebbardsville Road, Athens, OH.

Jean Carolyn Back’s legacy endures in the bonds of her extraordinary family, in gardens blooming anew each spring, in every shared story, and in the countless moments she made brighter. She will be deeply missed, yet remembered always for the love, joy, and steadfast comfort she gave so freely.
