Janie L. O'Brien, born on July 19, 1959, passed away peacefully on June 9, 2026. Her life was marked by a fierce independence and an unyielding strength of will that left an indelible impression on all who knew her. She was a force of nature, a woman who loved deeply and embraced life with passion and conviction.
Janie’s career was a testament to her love of cooking and creativity. She thrived as a Chef, bringing her culinary talents to Lexis Nexis, Wright State University, and Wittenberg University. Beyond her professional roles, she owned and operated her own catering service, sharing her remarkable gift for food with her community. Her kitchen was a place where her vibrant personality shined, blending skill, artistry, and heart into every dish she prepared.
Her passions extended beyond the kitchen. Janie was an avid lover of animals and a devoted fan of the Cincinnati Bengals. She found joy in simple pleasures such as watching Steve Harvey, engaging in spirited games of Bingo, and visiting casinos where she enjoyed the thrill of gambling. These activities brought her happiness and connection, reflecting the fullness of her spirited nature.
Janie's family was at the core of her life. She is lovingly survived by her children, Josh Armitage and his wife Christine, and Sarah O'Brien. She treasured her grandchildren—Christopher, Kaleb, Carsynn, and Rosalyn—who brought light and laughter into her life. She is also survived by her sisters, Janet Watters and Jackie Niece, and her special friends who stood by her side, Vicki Thompson, Tami Coe, Ginny Cutlip, and numerous friends and family at Walnut Creek. She was also surrounded by many nieces, nephews, and loving friends who cherished her dearly.
Janie was preceded in death by her loving husband, George "Gary" O'Brien; parents, Joretha and Jack Nawman, and her siblings Jeffrey Nawman, Judy Baldwin, and Jeanene Deady. Their memory remains a lasting part of her story and legacy.
Throughout her life, Janie L. O'Brien embodied resilience, passion, and unwavering love. Her presence enriched the lives of everyone fortunate enough to know her. Though she has departed from this world, her spirit lives on in her family, friends, and in the countless hearts she touched with her kindness, her strength, and her zest for life. She will be deeply missed and forever remembered with profound respect and affection.
Janie and Gary will be laid to rest at Dayton National Cemetery at a later date.
