Listen to Obituary

James Harry Tredinnick, known to many as Jim, died at Hospice of Dayton on September 4, 2026. He was born on October 7, 1942, in Wilkes Barre, Pennsylvania, and lived a life marked by service, faith, and love for family.

He is survived by his wife, Naomi Tredinnick; his daughter, Candice Sweet; his stepdaughter, Carrie Booker and partner Kehala; his granddaughter, Maddie Booker; and his sister-in-law, Anne Marie Tredinnick. He was preceded in death by his parents, John and Doris Tredinnick, by his brother, Jack Tredinnick, and his first wife Sandra Ralph (mother of Candice). His memory lives on in the family who loved him and in the many lives touched by his faith, his voice, and his determination to help shape a more just world.

Jim retired after 42 years of dedicated service as a Housing Inspection Supervisor for the City of Dayton. Prior to his career with the city, he followed his deep spiritual calling, earning a Master’s Degree in Theology from United Theological Seminary. He was subsequently ordained by the United Church of Christ and went on to pastor several congregations, serving his communities with faith and compassion.

He was passionate about social justice issues and about standing up for equality. That commitment shaped much of his life. Jim attended many civil rights demonstrations and was an active change maker. He was present at Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, and he also took part in the first Women's march in Washington, D.C. These were not passing moments of interest for him, but part of a lifelong witness to the values he held most deeply.Jim and his wife were members of Harmony Creek Church and later attended Fairview United Methodist Church. Jim and Naomi also enjoyed being members of the World House Choir that focuses on music that motivates and inspires our communities toward justice, diversity, inclusion, and equality as we strive for peace and create our web of mutuality. Music always held an important place in his life. In addition to singing in multiple choir groups over the years, he was also a musician and songwriter. Jim learned to play the accordion and moved on to learning how to play his 12 and 6 string guitars. He took pleasure in writing lyrics to typical tunes for events such as his daughter’s birthday parties and many retirement celebrations.

Jim especially enjoyed spending time with family. This included many trips back to Wilkes-Barre. He also enjoyed our Sunday family dinner with the family which included Betty(dog) and Minnie(cat).
