James Edward "Jim" Phillips, age 88, passed away peacefully on March 10, 2026, in Dayton, Ohio. Born on June 1, 1937, in Dayton, Ohio, Jim lived a full and meaningful life rooted in love for his family and the simple joys of everyday moments.
Jim proudly served his country as an Army SP-5 from 1959 to 1962, holding the rank of Sergeant. His time in the military instilled in him a sense of discipline and dedication that he carried throughout his life.
A quiet man by nature, Jim found happiness in life’s simple pleasures. He cherished relaxing on the back porch with an occasional cigar and sharing Sunday family dinners accompanied by a glass of red wine. His children and grandchildren never left a visit without the gift of a Tootsie Pop. Jim had a wonderfully dry sense of humor and a knack for delivering unexpected remarks or perfectly timed one-liners that caught us off guard and left us laughing.
Jim had a deep passion for travel and believed strongly in the value of family vacations or adventures with his wife, Marianne, of 61 years. Every summer was marked by a trip he meticulously planned, whether it was camping next to a fire or embarking on adventures to destinations like California or Disney. These trips were more than just vacations-they were opportunities for Jim to bring his family closer together and teach them how to embrace life’s experiences.
Above all else, Jim will be remembered for his quiet strength and unwavering love for his family. He created countless traditions and memories that will continue to live on through those who knew and loved him.
Jim is survived by his beloved wife, Marianne Phillips; daughters Christina Duffy (Rick), Kathy Schrepferman, and Becky Wenger (Mike); grandchildren Brittany, Zachary, Joshua, Emily, Adam, Sam, Michael, Matthew, and Kate; and great-granddaughter Evelyn. He was predeceased by his parents Robert and Marie Phillips; brother Donald; and sister Anita.
May Jim’s memory bring comfort to all who knew him and inspire them to cherish the simple yet profound moments in life. A Funeral Mass will be held on March 17, 2026, from 10:30 AM to 11:30 AM at St. Charles Borromeo Catholic Church 4500 Ackerman Blvd. Viewing Hour 9:30am-10:30am. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Hospice of Dayton.
