James L. Payton, age 82 beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend passed away on January 2, 2026 after a courageous battle with melanoma while he was receiving immunotherapy. He was born in Dayton, OH on October 15,1943 to Charles and Mayme Payton.

Jim graduated from Colonel White High School in 1961. He retired from General Motors with over 30 years of service. After retirement, Jim spent many hours at garage sales and flea markets doing what he loved – finding good bargains, fixing up items, and selling them. He loved working on classic cars and enjoyed attending car shows with friends who shared his passion. Jim found joy in sharing engaging stories and showcasing his remarkable memory.

He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Dee, his daughter Stacey (Ray) Weber and grandchildren Allie and Brady Weber. Along with his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Tom Payton, and his siblings, Betty Hoke, Carl Payton, and Carol Wiley. As we reflect on Jim’s life, we reflect on his quiet strength and love he shared with his family and friends.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
