It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of James Robert Kilgore, affectionately known to many as "Chop," who left this world on April 13, 2026, in Kettering, Ohio. Born on February 12, 1969, in Huntington, West Virginia, James’s life was one marked by kindness, generosity, and an unyielding love for his family and community.

James was a man whose warmth transcended all boundaries; he never knew a stranger and welcomed everyone with open arms. Known for his gentle, caring nature and a hearty, infectious sense of humor-often endearingly referred to as a “Goofy Goober”-he brought joy and laughter into the lives of all who had the privilege of knowing him. His keen intellect and remarkable memory stood alongside his sentimental spirit, making him not only a treasured storyteller but also a reliable pillar in his family.

A proud veteran, James honorably served in the United States Army Reserve, embodying dedication and patriotism. Beyond his service, he followed a myriad of passions that reflected his multifaceted character. From his love of cooking and cultivating organic gardens to fishing and mushroom hunting, James was a true jack of all trades, always eager to tinker and mend, approaching each task with skill and enthusiasm. His commitment to healthful living and nutrition further revealed his habitual care for well-being, both his own and that of those around him.

James was a devoted fan of Marshall University, a pride he carried with unwavering loyalty. In tribute to his memory, guests are encouraged to wear the university’s colors, honoring this enduring passion.

Family was the cornerstone of James’s life and the source of his greatest pride. He shared 33 years with his beloved wife, Lynn Kilgore, a partnership grounded in mutual love and respect. Together, they nurtured a loving family, including their three children: Tiffany Benner; Ryan (Megan) Kilgore and Randy Kilgore (Victoria Bohache). James was a doting grandfather to Maison, Colten, Jensen, Michael, and Eila, cherishing each moment spent with them. His reverence and devotion extended to his mother, Jacqueline Chapman; siblings Bonnie Diaz (Doug) and Shelly Chapman (David); as well as beloved in-laws, Randy and Diana Plantz.

The bonds James maintained with his extended family were rich and numerous, including nieces Amber, Brittany, and Chelsea Kilgore; great-nieces Zoe, Kyla, and Zaylah; and great-nephew King, alongside many more nieces, nephews, cousins, family members, in-laws, and cherished friends. He was proud in his roles as husband, father, grandfather, and uncle, leaving behind a legacy of love and belonging.

We also remember with solemn respect those family members who preceded James in death: his father, Kenneth Ray Kilgore Sr.; brother, Kenneth Ray Kilgore Jr.; uncle Gary Thompson Sr.; and cousin Gary “Froggie” Thompson Jr., whose memories live on in the hearts of all who knew them.

James Robert Kilgore’s life was a testament to the power of kindness, the significance of family, and the joy found in simple pleasures. His presence enriched the lives of countless individuals, and his memory will forever be a beacon of warmth and laughter. As we mourn his passing, we also celebrate the remarkable life he led and the enduring impact he leaves behind.
