James Clarence Hoffman, age 87, of Dayton, passed away March 25, 2026. James was born in Jasper, Indiana, on November 29, 1938, to the late Clarence and Verona Hoffman.
James was a graduate of Fairmont High School in Kettering and went on to earn an Associate of Arts from Sinclair Community College. A man of steadfast work ethic, James retired from the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) as a driver after 26 years of dedicated service. His skill behind the wheel was unmatched; he frequently traveled the country to compete in professional driving competitions, notably winning first place in 1984 and consistently placing in the top ranks throughout his career.
A devoted member of Christ the King Anglican Church, James served his parish in many capacities, including as a member of the Vestry and as a Lector. His faith was put into action through his kindness, as he frequently provided transportation for parishioners who otherwise could not attend Sunday services.
James was a musician at heart who spent his life performing, practicing, and sharing his vast talents with the community. His love for music saw him perform with the Bach Society, Dayton Opera, New Horizons Band at the University of Dayton, and the Centerville Community Band, among others. He will be remembered by those who knew him as a generous, inquisitive, and intellectual man with a profound love for nature.
James was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his sons, Jeff (Jackie) Hoffman and Tim (Cindy) Hoffman; his daughters, Tamara (Ron) Redmon and Noel (Todd) Long; his grandchildren, Jordan and Austin (Abigail) Hoffman, and seven additional beloved grandchildren.
