Listen to Obituary

James Henry Daugherty, known as JD, was born on November 16, 1948, in Dayton, Ohio. He passed away peacefully on July 29, 2025, leaving behind a legacy defined by his unwavering love and humorous spirit.

JD devoted 38 years and 11 months of his work life to General Motors -Truck and Bus, as a Supervisor and progressing to the role of General Foreman, before retiring. JD exemplified great character for his steadfast commitment to his work. His colleagues remember him not only for his managerial skills but also for his kind demeanor and sense of humor. JD had a knack for bringing joy to those around him, always ready with a joke that resonated with his personal philosophy: " Win If You Can, Lose If You Must, But Always Cheat ”

A proud graduate of Dunbar High School, JD was a man of diverse interests, reveling in the joys of life outside of work. He found pleasure in playing cards, enjoyed fishing outings with friends from work, and cherished the rituals of smoking cigars. Nothing, however, brought him greater joy than the time spent with his beloved family. Family gatherings, particularly cookouts, were a highlight of his life, where laughter and camaraderie were abundant.

JD was a devoted husband to Beverly, his loving wife of 21 years. Together, they created countless memories that will forever be treasured. His proudest accomplishment was marrying her, solidifying a partnership grounded in love and laughter. He was a loving father to daughters Denna Daugherty, Bobbie Daugherty, Maria Birdsong, Dana Smith, and son Galen Drake. His family grew to include grandchildren Kevin Daugherty, Keith Daugherty, Khris Williams, Ceaira Bean, Kori Daugherty, Dutchie Bean, Dina Bean, Kenya (Hannah) Williams, Jihad Daugherty, Maryam Daugherty, Santana Birdsong, and Jayvias Smith along with a loving number of great-grandchildren.

Family bonds were important to JD, and he took pride in his relationships with them all: siblings Florence Babalola, Norman (Joyce) Daugherty, Wendell (Yvette) Daugherty, Kenneth (Nedra) Daugherty, Rhena Anderson, and Rhonda Daugherty. He also shared a special connection with his sister-in-laws, Karen Hampton and Lynn Stevenson and brother-in-laws Earnest Stevenson, Terrence (Joyce) Stevenson, and Jeffrey (Valerie) Stevenson, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and dear friends who will miss him dearly.

JD touched many lives with his loving, kind, and funny personality. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him, yet his spirit will live on in the hearts of those he loved and who love him still. He joins the embraces of his late father, Willie D. Turner, his mother, Betty Louise Daugherty, and his sister, Lynette Hicks, who welcomed him with open arms.

As we remember JD, we hold tight to the memories he gifted us and the love he so deeply embodied.
