James Thomas "Tom" Cope, a dedicated retired Lieutenant Police Officer, passed away peacefully on February 17, 2026, in his birthplace of Dayton, Ohio. Born on June 20, 1951, Tom devoted a significant portion of his life to public service, proudly serving as a police officer in Denville, New Jersey from 1984 to 2000. He was deeply passionate about his career, finding fulfillment in protecting and serving his community.
Outside of his law enforcement duties, James was a man of varied interests and hobbies. A devoted fan of the New York Jets, he cherished the moments spent attending games with friends, creating lifelong memories that reflected his spirited enthusiasm for sports. Additionally, Tom enjoyed gambling and visiting the horse track, often sharing these experiences with his family, to whom he was deeply committed. He also had a love for travel, frequently spending time in Florida, where he enjoyed spending time with friends at Tiki bars.
Tom is survived by his daughters, Marci Cope and Aimee (Andrew) Cope; grandchildren: Nathan, Colton, Peyton, Ryder, and Elliot; brother, Mike (Pat) Cope; mother of his children, Debra Cope; special nephew, Jamy (Keri) Cope along with numerous nieces and nephews and friends will also remember James fondly.
He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Mary Cope; sister, Margaret Cope; and brother, Phillip Cope.
Tom will be remembered not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his unwavering love for his family and his passionate pursuits. His legacy of service, camaraderie, and family devotion will continue to inspire those who knew and cherished him.
