Centerville, Ohio

James Odell Cavins Jr., affectionately known as Jim, passed away peacefully on May 6, 2025, surrounded by his beloved family. Born on May 14, 1946, in Martin, Kentucky, Jim lived a rich and fulfilling life, celebrated for his unwavering spirit and infectious personality. Jim was newly baptized, a cherished moment in his faith.

Professionally, Jim dedicated over 30 years of his life as a mechanic at Wright State University, where his keen skills and work ethic made a lasting impact on those fortunate enough to work alongside him. He graduated from Prestonsburg High School in Kentucky and Mayo Vocational with a certificate in welding. His education laid a strong foundation for a life marked by resilience and determination.

Jim was more than just a talented mechanic; he was a man full of life. He had an astounding ability to make everyone around him feel valued and loved. With a wonderful sense of humor and an amazing laugh, he brought joy to countless gatherings and moments. Jim's enthusiasm for nature was evident in his love for the great outdoors, where he found joy in fishing, boating, and traveling with his loving wife, Reba. His passion for life extended to his loyalty as a fan, as he proudly supported the Cincinnati Bengals and the Cincinnati Reds.

Family was the cornerstone of Jim's existence. He cherished every moment spent with his loved ones, continually showing them his affection in various ways. He leaves behind his adoring wife, Reba, and stepchildren Sharon (Dean) Deeter, George Whitaker, Cheryl (Paul) Bruno, Walley Whitaker, and Joyce Hiler. He is also survived by his sister, Mary "Tootie" (Leo) Music of Paintsville, Kentucky, along with cherished nieces Cynthia (Robert) Devol of Florida, Heather (Jason) Slone of Hippo, Kentucky, and Jessica Music of Paintsville, Kentucky. His nephews David (Julie) Terry of Toboso, Ohio, and Christopher (Jennifer) Cavins of Prestonsburg, Kentucky, who also hold dear memories of their beloved uncle. Additionally, Jim leaves a legacy of love in the form of grandchildren, great-grandchildren, great-nieces, and nephews, all of whom will remember him for his gentle kindness and warm heart.

Jim's journey through this world was not without its sorrow. He mourned the loss of his father, James Cavins, his mother, Mary Lucille Farquer, his sister, Rose Lee Terry, and his brother, Kermit Daryl Cavins. He also remembered his dear niece, Rachel Cavins Dunn, who left this world too soon. They were a part of his story, and their memories will forever be cherished.

Though Jim has departed from this earthly realm, his spirit remains alive in the hearts of those who loved him. He will be remembered for his kindness, laughter, and his ability to never meet a stranger. Jim's legacy will continue to inspire all who were touched by his love and friendship.
