James Burgess, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, left this world on September 3, 2025, at the age of 82. Born on January 15, 1943, in Detroit, Michigan, James's life was marked by an indomitable spirit filled with vigor and laughter.
A self-employed man in home renovation, James approached his work with the same enthusiasm he brought to all aspects of life. He was a man full of "piss and vinegar" and possessed a great sense of humor that made those around him feel at ease. His onery nature was balanced beautifully by his kindness and generosity towards those he loved, traits that endeared him to everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Family was the cornerstone of James’s existence. His devotion to his wife, Sandra Burgess, was evident in every gesture and every dance he shared with her on the dance floor-how he adored sweeping her off her feet. Together, they created a home filled with warmth, laughter, and cherished memories. James was a proud father to his daughter, Sherri Pitt, and a doting grandfather to his grandchildren, Ryan, Matt (Brittney), Spencer, Danielle, Sarah, Devin, and Trevor (Mercedes). The joy he derived from spending time with them was immeasurable, and he often shared stories punctuated with lively anecdotes from his life.
James’s legacy extends beyond his immediate family to his beloved great-grandchildren, Collin, Liam, Zoie, Brinley, Quintin, and Zayne. Each child brought him immense happiness, and he took great pride in being a central figure in their lives. He also maintained close ties with his nephew, Terry, and niece, Jolene, reinforcing the values of family connectivity and love.
Though James has departed from this life, his memory will forever be etched in the hearts of those he leaves behind. He is reunited with his parents, James Sr. and Winnie Burgess, along with two sons, James Jr. and Lucas Burgess, and a brother-in-law, Roger Bogard, who patiently await him in eternal peace.
As we remember James, we celebrate a man who embraced life fully, playing avidly at poker, cards, pool, or anything else that allowed for a little friendly competition. He found joy in the thrill of the game, but more importantly, in the company of family and friends sharing laughter and love.
James Burgess’s life was a testament to the beauty of living with intention, humor, and deep familial bonds. He will be missed but never forgotten. His spirit lives on in the stories told, the lessons imparted, and the love shared among those he touched in his remarkable journey.
