James Elbert Branch, a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend, peacefully passed away at his home in Fairfield, Ohio on July 12, 2025. Born on September 13, 1936, in Boligee, Alabama, James lived a life filled with dedication, hard work, and an unwavering commitment to his family and community.
James embarked on a journey north to Dayton, following in the footsteps of his brother Robert, who served in the military. This move marked the beginning of a meaningful life wherein he owned and operated his own carpet cleaning and furniture upholstery business, alongside various side jobs that showcased his industrious nature. His career also included a role as a custodian at Wright State University, where he contributed his talents for many years, until his retirement.
An alumnus of Greene County Training School, James furthered his education by obtaining an HVAC certification from Wright State University, which complemented his extensive skill set. Throughout his life, he was known for his quiet strength, deep humility, and a facetious sense of humor that brought joy and laughter to those around him. His storytelling ability made lasting impressions, providing steady guidance to his family and friends, accentuated by his warm smile.
James was a dedicated family man and deeply involved in his church community, particularly at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church where he served as a sound technician. He was also involved in the men's choir and participated in the bowling league. He cherished family reunions and proudly served as president of the Family Reunion Committee, nurturing connections that spanned generations.
He is survived by his loving daughters, Renee (Ian) Talbert and Colette (Simon) Shakespeare, who carry forward his legacy of love and dedication. James was a proud grandfather to Liam Shakespeare, Levi Shakespeare, Lukas Talbert, and Isabella Talbert. He is also survived by his brother, John (Gladys) Branch; sisters, Mattie Franklin and Rowena Piner; and a host of nieces, nephews, and loving family members who will deeply miss his presence.
Along with his parents, James was preceded in death by his wife, Emma Ree Branch; and siblings, Richard Branch, Fannie Carpenter, Robert Branch, Rebecca King, and Augusta Tolliver.
Visitation will be held on Friday, August 1, 2025 from 10 am to 11 am at St. Luke Missionary Baptist Church (2262 N. Gettysburg Avenue, Dayton, OH 45406). Funeral service will begin at 11 am. James will be laid to rest in West Memory Gardens in Dayton, Ohio.
As we remember James Elbert Branch, we celebrate a life well-lived—a life characterized by hard work, family values, and a commitment to community. His contributions and the laughter he shared will remain in the hearts of those fortunate enough to have known him.
