Jack Russell Spence

Jack Russell Spence, age 92, passed away on August 30, 2026.

Jack was born to Russell and Esther Spence on December 7, 1933. Jack is survived by his loving wife, Sheila, of 35 years; his daughter, Deborah (Jim) Deuser; and sons, Greg and Jay. He is also survived by his step-daughter, Jennifer Wood Schweikert (Dan); and step-son, David Wood (Kathy). Also surviving Jack are his much loved grandchildren, Lauren Deuser, Drew Schweikert (McKenzie), Garrett Wood (Becky), Brad Schweikert (Taylor), and Kayla Wood-Torres (Ruben). Jack is survived by his brothers-in-law and sister-in-law, and many nieces and nephews. He had a very special love for sister-in-law, Ginger Rees, and her late husband, Don.

Preceding Jack in death were his parents, and his first wife, Janet, who was the mother of his children.

Jack attended Henry Grady High School in Atlanta, GA which had an enrollment of 2,600 students. There he played football, basketball and was a 2-time High School All-American in Track. He was President of his Freshman Class. In January of Jack's Junior Year, his family moved to St. Joseph, MO. There he attended Central High School where he played football and ran track. He obtained All-American Status in track at Central High. Jack attended College at NW Missouri University where he ran track. He was a 3-time College All American in 100 yard dash. His best time was 9.5 with the world record being 9.3.

Janet Spence passed away August 4, 1984. These were hard times for the family. They handled it in the best way possible.

Jack and Sheila were married on December 28, 1985 at Normandy United Methodist Church where they met. Jack and family felt very blessed. Jack and Sheila loved to travel and went on many trips around the world. They went to many of Sheila's family reunions which they thoroughly enjoyed!

Jack was President of Spence Insurance Group for many years. He worked until he was 78 years of age. He enjoyed retirement, especially his time at Trinity Community of Miami Township. Jack was an avid sports fan. He followed a number of teams. He had a real fondness for movies since childhood and was quite good at movie trivia. Jack will be remembered by his friends for his sense of humor. Jack was a loving husband, father, and grandfather.

Following Jack's wishes, there will only be graveside services for the family. There will be no visitation. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the Normandy United Methodist Church Endowment Fund. Arrangements are being handled by Newcomer Funeral Home, Centerville Chapel.
