Inell Smith

Inell Smith passed away peacefully on February 7, 2026, in Dayton, OH. Born August 5, 1952, Inell lived her life with an incredible work ethic and a competitive spirit that never faded. She dedicated 32 years to Mountain Bell/Ohio Bell/Ameritech where she worked in the business office and climbed telephone poles, and another 14 years at Speedway LLC in the mailroom, HR, and her most loved position as the receptionist for her C-building team, with her final retirement in 2021. Sharp-witted and quick with a comeback, Inell kept everyone on their toes and made sure life and work was never dull.

Inell loved sports, she played competitive softball and was the Arizona female stock car driver of the year in 1975. Her love of sports and competition spilled into her love of supporting her only grandchild, Colton, in all his endeavors. She never missed his events, whether 4H, basketball, or many a soccer game - including every college game; known to all his teammates as “Mamaw Smith”. A devoted Duke basketball fan, she followed every season passionately and never backed down from some good banter. She loved her Coach K and made sure every Tarheel and Wildcat fan knew it.

Volunteering was also close to Inell’s heart, as she especially looked forward to Honor Flight and Angel Tree events. She lived with her whole heart, giving her time generously, and showing up fully for the people and causes she cared about.

She was preceded in death by her father, Tracy Tipton; mother, Gustin Tipton; brothers, Elihu Tipton and Tracy Tipton, Jr.; daughter, Tracey Smith; her favorite sister-in-law, Joanne Smith; great nephews Joshua Hamilton and Tucker Sandlin.

Inell is survived by her daughter, Teri Smith; grandson, Colton Smith; sister, Stella “Jessie” Boekel, along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.

Services are pending at this time and will be announced here on Monday, February 9, 2026. Inell will be laid to rest near her father and brother at Dayton Memorial Park Cemetery.
