Howard "Ward" Michaelson, a distinguished figure of professional creativity whose life was marked by artistry, dedication, and an unwavering passion for both his professional work and personal interests, passed away on April 4, 2026, near his home in Dayton, Ohio. Born on January 16, 1944 in New York City, Ward lived a full and impactful life that spanned over eight decades, leaving behind a legacy cherished by all who knew him.
The scope and breadth of Ward’s creative journey was nothing short of astounding. He enjoyed a successful 60-year career in Industrial Design, a field where his creative vision and meticulous attention to detail earned him great respect and admiration. His foundation in the arts was solidly built with his education at two prestigious institutions: the High School of Music and Art in New York, followed by his graduation from the Parsons School of Design. These early experiences shaped Ward into the innovative and thoughtful designer he became, influencing and mentoring many young talents, and contributing significantly to his profession across many categories, including housewares, toys, furniture, decorative linens and much more.
Beyond his career, Ward was deeply engaged in activities that reflected his diverse passions and values. A committed member and instructor of the National Rifle Association (NRA), he embodied discipline and focus, qualities that extended into all aspects of his life. Equally, he was a passionate horticulturist, cultivating his love for nature with the same devotion he applied to design. His enthusiasm for classic cars reflected his appreciation for timeless craftsmanship and elegance. Ward also adored his dogs, finding companionship and joy in their presence. Known as a fierce patriot, his love for his country was a consistent and defining aspect of his character.
Ward's personal life was marked by strong and loving relationships, which formed the cornerstone of his happiness. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Elaine, whom he first met in the same class of kindergarten in the Bronx, and whose partnership and shared life with Ward stood as a testament to enduring love and mutual respect. Together, they raised three sons: Adam, married to Stacey; Matthew, married to Dayna; and Peter, married to Maria. Ward’s legacy extends through his grandchildren—Alexander, Spencer, Kathyryn, Shane, Brandon, Eliana (married to Alex Wielgus) and Sarah-Ann of whom carried forward his spirit and values. The family circle further expands to include his great-grandson Alden, symbolizing the continuing life and influence of Ward’s lineage. He is also survived by his brother Jack, as well as numerous extended family members and friends who were fortunate to share in his life and cherish his friendship.
Ward was preceded in death by his parents, Elias “Al” and Elizabeth “Betty” (Marron) Michaelson, who no doubt played a significant role in shaping the man he became. The family also continues to mourn the loss last year of a grandson, Benjamin, whose memory remains a part of their lives.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, April 10 at 11:00AM, at David’s Cemetery, 4600 Mad River Rd, Dayton, OH 45429.
Howard “Ward” Michaelson’s life was a beautiful tapestry of accomplishment, passion, and devotion, reflecting the qualities of a man who valued excellence, family, and community. He leaves behind a lasting imprint on his profession and the hearts of his loved ones. His memory will continue to inspire all who knew him, reminding us of a life well-lived and a legacy of integrity and love.
