McLaughlin, Herbert J., age 86, of Centerville, OH passed away on April 4, 2017. He was born in Philadelphia, PA on September 30, 1930, son of the late Herbert F. and Margaret (Walsh) McLaughlin.
Preceded in death by his wife, Joan, he is survived by their children: Mary (Tom) Pfahler, Ellen (Paul) Scullin, Susan (Ken) Johnston, Eileen (Mitch) Toda, Michael (Teresa) and Patrick (Julie): 16 grandchildren and two great grandchildren, and his sister Mary (Tim) Herczeg.
Herb was a graduate of Northeast Catholic High School, Philadelphia, PA and LaSalle University, where he majored in Accounting and was a member of the 1951 Middle Atlantic Conference co-championship baseball team. He was a veteran of the United States Navy. After graduating from Officer Candidate School in Newport, RI, he served on the USS Reedbird AMS 51. He retired from Morton International Inc. in Chicago, IL where he was the Manager of Group Insurance and Pensions. He was previously employed by Thiokol Corporation in Newton, PA and SPS Company in Jenkintown, PA. He was a Neighborhood Commissioner of the Valley Forge Council of the Boy Scouts of America and a member of the Abington Township, PA Juvenile Liaison Committee. He was an officer of the Home and School Association, Holy Name Society, CYO Coaches Association and the parish credit union when he was a member at St. John of the Cross Parish in Roslyn, PA.
Herb was a member of the first group of the laity, and he was appointed by John Cardinal Krol for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia as an Extra-ordinary Minister of Holy Communion. As a member of St. Petronille Parish in Glen Ellyn IL, he was on the core group for the parish Renew Program and the Chairman of the Liturgy Committee. He served as a member of the RCIA, Youth Ministry and Catholic Charities' Jail Ministry programs when he was a member of St. Henry's Parish in West Carrollton, OH. Herb was a resident of St. Leonard in Centerville, OH where he was a volunteer for the Spiritual Care Department and the St. Leonard Foundation. He also served as the President of the Resident Council.
Visitation will be held at 12 Noon for both Herb and his wife, Joan, on Friday, April 7th at St. Leonard's Chapel followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 1 PM. Interment will follow the Mass at Calvary Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the St. Leonard Benevolent Care Fund, 8100 Clyo Rd, Centerville, OH 45458 in Herb's memory.
