Listen to Obituary

Hazel Viola Kessler passed away on February 23, 2026, at the age of 89. Born on November 13, 1936, in Dayton, Ohio, she remained a lifelong resident of the city she proudly called home.

Hazel was an intelligent and spirited woman who loved anything that kept her mind sharp. Crossword puzzles and word hunts were among her favorite pastimes, and she worked them faithfully for as long as she was able. She loved to read and could often be found immersed in her favorite romance novels.

She was incredibly gifted with her hands and was talented at both knitting and crocheting, creating beautiful pieces with patience and care. She took pride in her work and in the simple, meaningful things that filled her days.

Hazel had a wonderful sense of humor and cherished laughter. She enjoyed sitting with family, sharing stories, and finding joy in simple moments. Some of the most meaningful memories her family holds are filled with her laughter and the warmth she brought into every room.

Her faith was an important part of her life. Hazel loved Jesus and openly claimed Him as her Lord and Savior. Her belief gave her strength through life’s hardships and was a steady foundation beneath the love she extended to others.

She was the daughter of Edith V. Richardson and Louis Martin Sowards Sr., and the beloved sister of Barbara Denman, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her son Michael Denman, her daughter Tamara Stewart, her son Anthony Decker, and her niece Karla Ward.

Hazel was a devoted mother to Angela Carter and Brian Decker, and a loving and steady presence in the life of Donald Ward III. She was a proud grandmother to Michael Sanders, Danielle Blackshear (Austin Blackshear), Brianna Carter, and Christopher Salone. To them, she was simply Grandma.

Her legacy continues through her great grandchildren Adonis Blackshear, Kenji Blackshear, and Isabella Blackshear, along with many others whose lives were shaped by her love.

Hazel’s life was defined by resilience, strength, faith, and an unwavering devotion to her family. She loved deeply, laughed freely, and gave more than she ever asked in return. The foundation she built through love and presence will carry forward for generations.

She will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Grandma, thank you for the countless ways you poured into our lives. Your love never wavered, and it will live on in all of us. Love you forever, sweet girl.

A private service is being held at the convenience of the family.

A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.
