Harold F. Workman Jr., "JR," a devoted family man, a hardworking professional, and a proud veteran, passed away on April 21, 2026, at Kettering Hospital after a courageous battle with lung cancer. Born on March 23, 1951, in Page, West Virginia, JR lived a life marked by dedication, resilience, and love for those around him.
JR graduated from Franklin High School and furthered his education at Miami University of Ohio. His commitment to service was exemplified by his time in the United States Army, where he served his country and worked as a surveyor. Following his military service, JR contributed his skills and labor to the construction industry, was employed at Franklin Box Board, and later served as an assistant in heating and air, demonstrating the dependability and work ethic that came to define his character.
Known for his stubborn streak, JR was nevertheless deeply dependable and steadfast. Those who knew him respected his relentless work ethic and his enduring love for his family. Above all, his proudest accomplishments were his children, a testament to his devotion as a father. JR’s affection extended also to his beloved cat, Monkee, and his cherished dog, Texas, who preceded him in death.
JR shared a rich and rewarding life with his beloved wife of 29 years, Darlene Workman. Together, they found great joy in spending time at their cabin in the woods in Adams County, a sanctuary where memories of peace, nature, and togetherness were made. His hobbies reflected his connection to the outdoors, including beekeeping, gardening, fishing, and hunting, often accompanied by Texas.
JR is survived by his loving wife, Darlene; son, Bret Workman (Jen); daughter, Teri Engelman (Larry Cyphers); grandchildren Sydney, Cora, and Cooper Workman, Leo Rupert, and Kevin Engelman (Erin); and great-grandchildren Kameron and Jackson Engelman. He also leaves behind siblings Brenda Workman Rosser and Johnnie (Joni) Workman; son-in-law Bob Rupert; brother-in-law John Dressler; and sisters-in-law Emma Dressler and Carol Dressler. Numerous nieces, nephews, and friends—including Jeff Hill, Chuck Wolfinbarger, Larry York, Jimmy Herd, and Sean Davis—cherish his memory and the impact he had on their lives.
JR was preceded in death by his parents, Harold Workman Sr. and Louise Workman; his daughter, Katie Jo Rupert; siblings Bobby Workman, Terry Workman, and Velma Workman Begley; brothers-in-law Frank Dressler and James Rosser; and his faithful dog, Texas.
JR's legacy is one of steadfast devotion to family, industriousness, and hearty appreciation of the simple joys of life. He will be remembered with respect and affection by all who had the privilege of knowing him. His memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends, and in the tranquil woods of Adams County where he found such comfort and happiness.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, April 28, 2026 from 11 am to 1 pm at Newcomer Centerville Chapel (820 Miamisburg-Centerville Rd., Dayton, OH 45459). Funeral service will begin at 1 pm. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery in Dayton, OH.
