Galen Verdal Drake, Sr., a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and cherished member of his community, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2026. Born on December 5, 1953, in Dayton, Ohio, Galen's journey was marked by a deep love for family, a joyful spirit, and an infectious passion for music that brought light and happiness to many.
A proud graduate of Dunbar High School, Galen dedicated much of his professional life to service and hard work. He spent about 15 years at Kettering Medical Center as a sterile processor, where his diligence and care were quietly remarkable. Later, he worked at DHL as a forklift operator, continuing to demonstrate his commitment and strong work ethic.
Beyond his career, Galen was known far and wide as the "Disco King." His passion for being a DJ was more than a hobby; it was a gift he shared generously. Those who knew him remember his wit, silliness, and loving nature, as well as his heartfelt desire to make others happy with his music and DJing. Whether at family gatherings or celebrations, his presence was a source of joy and laughter, punctuated by his spirited enjoyment of life.
Galen's love extended beyond the turntables. He was an avid sports fan, faithfully cheering for his favorite team, the Cincinnati Bengals. Yet, his greatest joy was being around his family—spending time with them was where his heart truly belonged.
He leaves behind a loving wife, Dimple, whose partnership was a source of strength and happiness. His legacy continues through his children: Shanda, Dana Smith, Galen Drake Jr., Latasha Jones, Lamonte Cook, Lamar Cook, and Laron Jefferson. He was a proud grandfather to Jayvias Smith, Tyhi Conley, Anaya Conley, and Aja Conley. Galen is also survived by his brother, Lamar “Marty” Drake, and Marty’s wife, Yolanda, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends who will all fondly remember his warm heart and joyful spirit.
Galen was preceded in death by his parents, Otis and Eldamae Drake, and his brother, Gina Drake. Their memory remains an enduring part of the rich fabric of his life.
In his honor, let us remember the man who used his silliness and wit to brighten the darkest rooms, whose loving nature comforted all around him, who danced to the beat of his own turntable, and whose legacy is etched indelibly into the hearts of family and friends alike. Galen was more than a husband, father, or DJ; he was a beacon of happiness and a guardian of love’s enduring melody.
As we say goodbye to Galen, we hold tightly to the music he played, the laughter he inspired, and the love he freely gave. His spirit will forever echo in the hearts of those who had the privilege of knowing him—a true Disco King whose rhythm of kindness and joy will never fade.
