Gail Evan Vaubel

September 19, 1949 — May 1, 2024

Gail Evan Vaubel, age 74, passed away on May 1, 2024 surrounded by family in the James Cancer Hospital at Ohio State University. Gail was born to Kenneth and Lorraine Vaubel on September 19, 1949 in Jewell, Iowa. He graduated from South Hamilton High School in Jewell in 1967 and from Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa in 1971. He married his high school sweetheart, Amy Engelby in 1969.

Gail joined the United States Air Force in 1971 and served as a navigator on KC-135 tankers stationed with his family in Okinawa, Japan. While serving in Okinawa, he earned his MBA from the University of Hawaii. He then used his navigator skills in acceptance testing for the AWACS plane in Seattle, Washington. From there Gail flew the AWACS with NATO forces in Munich, Germany. He worked in contracting at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and then served as an AFPRO commander on Long Island, NY. After a short assignment to Saudi Arabia, he finished his Air Force career at WPAFB as a Lieutenant Colonel in 1994. He then worked for MTC Technologies for a few years and retired again.

Gail was an avid golfer, restored a 1956 Chevy, and remodeled a kitchen and a bathroom at home. He enjoyed helping with the harvest in Iowa on the land he owned, and managed his family farmland for his siblings. He was most active playing guitar in several groups; a country duo, a rock and roll trio, a Dixieland band, the church praise band, and his rock band from the 60's. That last band, made up of relatives and friends, had several reunions and performances over the years which he thoroughly enjoyed.

Gail was an outstanding husband, father, grandfather, son, sibling, cousin and friend to many. He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Amy; son Aaron (Angie) and granddaughters, Caylie and Kristina; son David (Kate); brother, Brian Vaubel (Tiekka) and sisters Cynthia Vaubel and Gretchen Warn (Dave).

Gail was very active in his church in many roles. Donations in his name can be made to Kirkmont Church, 3377 Shakertown Road, Beavercreek OH 45434. His Celebration of Life will be held at Kirkmont on Tuesday, May 28, 2024 at 11:00 am with visitation at 10:00am.
