Eugene S. Schumpert Jr.

December 4, 1935 — May 13, 2025

Eugene S. Schumpert Jr., affectionately known to many as Gene, Steve or Stee, passed away on May 13, 2025, at the age of 89. Born in Summerville, SC on December 4, 1935 Eugene was raised Episcopalian and lived a life characterized by dedication, kindness, and a profound passion for his work.

Eugene’s educational journey began as a 1953 graduate of Drayton Street School in Newberry, SC, before leading him to St. Augustine College in Raleigh, NC, where he was a member of Omega Psi Phi and graduated in 1957. Shortly after, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving as a lab technician at WPAFB in Dayton, OH. He was also involved in the Space Program, working in Centrifuge with the first NASA astronauts, the Mercury Seven. Following his military service, he devoted over four decades to the medical field, continuing his career in the local Dayton area at institutions such as St. Elizabeth's Hospital and Children's Hospital. He ultimately retired in 2004 from the Veteran's Administration Hospital, where his commitment to patient care and his profession was evident.

Quiet and reserved by nature, Eugene embodied generosity and kindness. While he often claimed not to be fond of cats, those close to him knew this was a playful secret. His work was of utmost importance to him, and he approached it with a seriousness that underscored his dedication to the field.

In his leisure time, Eugene found joy in music, curating an extensive record collection that featured his favorite musicians, including the legendary Miles Davis and John Coltrane. He also immersed himself in the realms of adventure and intrigue through reading, particularly enjoying novels related to Star Trek, James Bond, as well as Mack Bolan and Nick Carter. Alongside these interests, Eugene engaged in photography and enjoyed coin collecting, rounding out a life filled with diverse passions.

Eugene is survived by his loving wife, Linda Schumpert; his children, Eugene S. Schumpert III (Gloria), Kenya Schumpert, and Ian A. Schumpert; and step-daughter, Augustina Cabral; his siblings, James P. Schumpert Sr. (Betty), Eddie Schumpert Caldwell, and Frances C. Wright; grandchildren, Taiña N. Schumpert and Soraya M. Schumpert; great-grandchildren, Elijah Schumpert, Malachi Schumpert, Araya Van Kley, Genesis Napier, Serenity Schumpert, and Trinity Brown; his sister-in-law, Marianne Ruse; and a host of nieces, nephews, family, and friends.

Eugene was preceded in death by his parents, Janie Mae and Eugene S. Schumpert Sr., his sister, F. Janet Spaulding; mother of Eugene III and Kenya, his first wife Nada Jean (Williams) Schumpert; and his step-sons, Gary Dean Cabral, Augustine Cabral III (Norma "Ginny") and Darryl Lee Cabral.

His legacy of service, music, and love will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
