Ernest Elwood Brackney, affectionately known as "Woody," passed away peacefully on January 18, 2026, at the age of 96. Born on December 11, 1929, in Dayton, Ohio, Woody was a man who approached life with dedication, hard work, and unwavering love for his family.
Throughout his career, Woody juggled various jobs to ensure that his wife could devote her time to caring for their daughters. He contributed significantly to the workforce, with positions at NCR, H+W Screw Products, and Lawrence Welk Village in California. His strong work ethic and commitment to providing for his family were hallmarks of his character.
Woody proudly served in the United States Army during the Korean War, where he took on a pivotal role in training soldiers on how to operate and drive tanks. This experience further showcased his dedication to serving others, and he carried the pride of his service throughout his life.
Known for his loving and witty personality, Woody cherished his time spent with family and friends. He was a motorcycle and car enthusiast, with many fond memories riding his Harley Davidson. In addition to his passion for motorcycling, Woody enjoyed playing golf and bowling, achieving the extraordinary feat of bowling two perfect games, a highlight reported by the Dayton Daily Newspaper Sports section. Woody also contributed to his community as the secretary of the 40 Club, engaging with fellow enthusiasts and making lasting connections.
Woody is survived by his loving daughters, Sherry Gross, Donna Hale, and Tammy Brackney; grandson, Shawn Gross; and great-grandchildren, Elowyn Renee Gross, Ender Lyken Gross, and Hayden Gross, brother, Robert “Bob” (Sonya) Wray, son-in-law, Ed Delk, along with many other family members and friends who will miss him dearly.
He rejoins his deceased family members, including his father, Russell Brackney; mother, Helen Wray; stepfather, Frank Wray; daughter, Debbie Miller-Delk; brother, Roger Wray; sister, Micky Wray; and the mother of his daughters, Ruby Brackney.
Woody lived a life full of love, laughter, and accomplishment, leaving behind a legacy that will endure through the many lives he touched. His memory will continue to inspire all who knew him.
