Miamisburg

Ernest D. Smith, a cherished husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, passed away on June 15, 2025, in Miamisburg, Ohio, at the age of 85. Born on February 11, 1940, in Brethitt County, Kentucky, Ernest's journey through life was marked by a deep love for his family, his faith, and a zest for living that inspired all who knew him.

Ernest dedicated over 32 years of his life to General Motors, a cornerstone of his career before enjoying a well-deserved retirement. His commitment extended beyond his professional life; he proudly served in the United States Army from 1959 to 1960, spending a significant time in Germany, where he learned to drive a tank while stationed at Ft. Knox. His experiences shaped him into the resilient man he became, and his passion for life overflowed into his personal interests.

A lover of music, Ernest found joy in being part of gospel quartets and was often seen strumming his guitar, sharing melodies that resonated with his unwavering faith. He was an active member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Miamisburg, where his faith was a pillar of strength, guiding him in all aspects of his life.

Ernest's love for sports was evident in his days as an avid bowler. He showcased remarkable determination and skill, eventually achieving a bowling average of over 200, despite an injury that forced him to switch from right to left hand. His curve ball became a symbol of his tenacity—a lesson to never give up, no matter the challenges life presented.

In his younger years, Ernest pursued bodybuilding passionately, achieving the esteemed title of Mr. Ohio Body Building Competition. His pursuit of excellence was visible not just in his physical accomplishments but also in his devotion to his family. He leaves behind his beloved wife, Dora Smith, and their three children: Randy (Jacqueline) Smith, Angela (David) Rogers, and Stacey (Josh) McQuiller. The love he sowed multiplied into a large family, including his grandchildren—Elizabeth, Jessica, Kelly, Annie, Emily, Marshall, Kate, Holly, and Kris—as well as nine great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson, all of whom held a special place in his heart.

Ernest is also survived by his brother, Seldon Smith, sister, Mollie Holbrook, brother-in-law, James Rison, sister-in-law, Sudie Rison, and special friend, Bill Hamblin. He will be remembered tenderly by numerous nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends whose lives he touched with his warmth and kindness.

Ernest's parents, John and Alpha Smith, along with his sisters-in-law, Margie Bolen and Shirley Smith, and his dear sister Carolyn Griffith, predeceased him, leaving behind rich memories cherished by those who loved him.

As we remember Ernest D. Smith, we celebrate a life well-lived, filled with music, laughter, love, and unwavering faith. His legacy of strength and resilience will endure in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him. May he rest in eternal peace, surrounded by the melodies he loved and the family he cherished.
