Listen to Obituary

Emelia Irene Parker, 77, passed away peacefully after a courageous journey with cognitive decline and cancer. She was born on August 20, 1948, to William and Julia (Hammond) Marcellino and grew up in Northern Virginia.

After graduating from high school, Emelia attended Ohio University, where she earned undergraduate degrees in Russian and History. It was there, in Chinese language class, that she met the love of her life, Elliott Parker. Together they shared an enduring passion for learning, travel, and exploring the world.

Following graduation, they moved to Malaysia, where their relationship deepened and they developed a lifelong appreciation for the cultures of Southeast Asia. Their experiences inspired them to co-author a book on Southeast Asia in 1979, and the region remained a favorite destination throughout their lives.

Emelia spent most of her professional career at the Grace A. Dow Memorial Library in Midland, Michigan, where she combined her love of books with an insatiable curiosity about the world. A lifelong learner, she delighted in discovering new ideas, places, and perspectives.

The greatest joy of Emelia’s life was her daughter, Alex. Alongside Elliott, she rarely missed an opportunity to support her, whether cheering from softball stands across the state during Alex’s youth or traveling to visit her at every duty station during her career as an Air Force officer. Emelia and Elliott took immense pride in Alex’s accomplishments and the life she built.

Following Alex’s graduation from Purdue University, Emelia and Elliott established the Parker Family Scholarship at the Purdue School of Nursing to support students who shared a commitment to making a difference through nursing and service to others.

Retirement afforded Emelia and Elliott the freedom to travel without schedules or obligations, and they eagerly embarked on several more international adventures together, continuing to nurture their love of exploration.

In her later years, Emelia faced the challenges of cognitive decline and cancer with remarkable grace. Though her memory and mobility diminished, her quick wit, infectious sense of humor, and ability to find joy in the moment never faded. Even on difficult days, the laughter she shared with Alex remained a constant reminder of the deep bond they cherished.

Emelia was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Elliott Parker; her parents, William and Julia Marcellino; and several cherished cats. She is survived by her devoted daughter, Alex, whose love and care brought comfort and happiness throughout her final years, and by her beloved cat, Maddie.

Emelia will be remembered for her intellect, wit, sense of humor, adventurous spirit, and unwavering love for her family. Her legacy will live on in the lives she touched and in the memories she created with those who knew and loved her.

A memorial dinner will be held on Monday, July 7, at 5:30 p.m. at Coco's Bistro in Dayton, Ohio.

A burial service will take place on Friday, July 11, at 1:00 p.m. at St. John's Episcopal Church in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, where Emelia will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband, Elliott.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to SICSA Pet Adoption & Wellness Center in Dayton, Ohio, or the Chippewa River District Library in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.
