Ellen S. Burt, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and a dedicated educator, passed away on September 11, 2025, at the age of 77. Born on February 5, 1948, in Lima, Ohio, Ellen made a profound impact on the lives of many throughout her remarkable journey.
Ellen is survived by her devoted husband, James Burt; her son, Michael (Jennifer) Burt; daughter, Julie Omondi; her grandchildren, Lauren Burt, Elise Burt, and Brenna Omondi; sisters Ann (Jerry) Jenkins and Carol Jean; and nephews Doug (Rebecca) Jenkins and their children, and Rob (Cristina) Jenkins and their children; and lifelong friends Maryrita and Howard Knachel.
She was preceded in death by her parents, William F. and Alice Smith; her brother, Cullen Smith; and her daughter-in-law, Hilary Burt.
Ellen dedicated 22 years of her life to teaching special needs students at West Carrollton Junior High, Dayton Public Schools at Roth Middle School, Belle Haven Elementary School, and Wogaman Middle School. During her working years she served as DEA building representative. After retirement from Dayton Public Schools, she served as a student teacher supervisor for seven years at Wright State University. Ellen was deeply invested in the educational community and was actively involved in the Dayton Education Association Retired (DEA-R), where she also held the position of Vice President for several years, advocating tirelessly for her colleagues and the education profession.
Academically, Ellen was well-prepared for her vital role; she earned her Bachelor's Degree from The Ohio State University and followed it with a Master’s Degree from the University of Dayton. Her educational background laid a strong foundation for her effective teaching and nurturing spirit.
Ellen's warmth and charisma left a lasting impression on everyone she encountered. She was known for never meeting a stranger, engaging warmly with new people and fostering connections wherever she went. A devoted grandmother, she cherished her time spent with Lauren, Elise, and Brenna, making memories that will be treasured forever. Ellen also had a special bond with her golden retriever, Mazie, whose playful presence brought her great joy.
Ellen enjoyed crafting, often participating in craft shows, where her creativity could shine. Additionally, she enjoyed participating in Trivia on Monday nights, displaying her extensive knowledge and love for learning. Ellen’s favorite time of year was Christmas in July and Christmas in December on the Hallmark Channel.
As we celebrate Ellen's life, we acknowledge a remarkable woman whose legacy of love, compassion, and dedication to education will continue to inspire all who knew her. She will be profoundly missed but forever remembered.
