Senior Chief Hospital Corpsman Douglas R. Thompson, Jr. passed away at his home on November 21st 2025. He leaves behind a larger-than-life legacy of love of family and service to his community and nation.
Family was everything to Doug. He was married to, as he was fond of saying, “my lovely wife Jenny,” for over 36 years, and she was forever his anchor and support. Their three children Lance, Cory (Jackie) and Kaylee (Justin) were his greatest happiness. He fully embraced his role as grandpa to his grandchildren Connor, Hayden and Felix, spoiling them at every opportunity. His greatest happiness was when the house was filled with the laughter of his kids and grandkids.
Doug served over 20 years starting in the United States Marine Corps before joining the Navy as a Hospital Corpsman, and then moving into federal service. He embodied the legacy of being “Doc” to not only his Marines but to every servicemember he encountered.
He was also a co-founder and board member for Summit for Soldiers, which utilized outdoor adventure programming as a therapeutic approach to healing and recovery for veterans and their family members suffering from mental health injuries.
A lifelong learner, he held multiple degrees and certifications, which included Certified Paramedic, a Bachelor's and Master’s in Healthcare Administration. He was forever championing education and driving others to further their own
Doug was known to be a dedicated Columbus Blue Jackets fan. He followed them religiously as a season ticket holder, building a small community of fellow Blue Jacket fans around him. When he couldn’t go, or the game was away, you could find him stationed in front of his TV, cheering them on
Doug was preceded in death by his mother Debra Thompson. He is survived by his father, Douglas R Thompson Sr, his brothers Gary, Bobby and Paul Thompson, his mother-in-law Janis Haas and his brother-in-law John (Betty) Leonard
Doug's absence leaves an immeasurable void in the lives of countless people he mentored, guided and was a true friend to. His legacy will inspire happy memories for those who knew him and the times they shared.
A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, January 17, 2026 from 12pm to 4pm at VFW Post 9582, 4170 Old Springfield Road, Vandalia, Ohio 45377.
