Dolores Thompson, age 81 of Dayton, passed away unexpectedly on Friday, March 31, 2017 at Miami Valley Hospital. She was born June 22, 1935 in Bonnyman, Kentucky. Born a twin they were so tiny that they both fit together in a shoe box. In order to be kept warm, they were kept snuggled inside a dresser drawer and under the covers at all times. Her mother thought her cries resembled that of a kitten and from that time forward, that's how she would always be known.
From a less than 2 lb. beginning, she became a fighter and a survivor. Traits she would carry though her entire life. When an illness in 2000 sent her to intensive care and doctors told everyone she had little chance, she proved them all wrong and made a full recovery. She refused to ever give in or give up.
She rarely, if ever, complained about anything. She wouldn't ask for help (even if she needed it) and when asked how she was doing, it seemed her answer was always that she was doing fine. Her usual answer :"I'm ok!".
She was always worrying and doing for others, never herself. She made sure to help out everyone she could in any way she could.
She was caring, selfless and honest to a fault. One of the only people who would return a few pennies to the cashier if they gave her too much change or forgot to charge her for an item - even if that meant driving back to the store after getting home.
Kitten loved to work in the yard on her flowers and garden. She enjoyed having her morning coffee outside on the swing, enjoying the fresh air and hoping to see the hummingbirds come to her feeder. For years, generations of red birds nested in her front porch light. One bird so tame he would tap on the front door just to be fed a peanut that she always kept close at hand, just for them. She enjoyed the outside so much that she still hung her clothes out on the line to dry because "they smelled better", even if that meant more work than was needed.
Everyone knew of Kitten's Down Home cooking. Beans, cornbread, freshly baked rolls, cakes and cookies. The "Yearly Christmas Candy" that she worked endlessly making so that everyone would always receive some. Even when arthritis was too painful to bear, she didn't stop. Always making sure to wrap each piece individually.
She enjoyed reading and quilting, and loved collecting red and white enamelware. But she especially enjoyed collecting her cobalt blue depression glass and glass stir sticks. Most of all she loved her husband, and her special bond with her twin sister.
Kitten leaves behind to cherish her memory her loving husband of 62 years, Odis Thompson; her son, Ricky Thompson; daughter, Sandy Thompson (Michelle); two sisters, Dorothy "Peanut" Huff, Betty Lewis; four grandchildren, Anthony Caviglia, Michael Caviglia, Christopher Thompson-Caviglia, Simara Fecke; great granddaughter, Claira Caviglia-Walden; former daughter-in-law, Crystal Caviglia (Sandy); Nephew, Randy Huff (Robert); and many other loving family members and friends.
Kitten is preceded in death by her parents John Parker and Martha Baker, Brother Don Colwell and daughter-in-law Lori Thompson (Rick).
Friends and family will be received Saturday, April 8, 2017 from 10 am to 11 am at Newcomer Funeral Home - North Chapel (4104 Needmore Rd., Dayton, Ohio 45424). Service will immediately follow. Interment will be in Willow View Cemetery. Following interment, all are welcome to gather for light food and refreshments at the VFW Post #9582, 4170 Old Springfield Rd., Vandalia, OH 45377.
