Derek Gunter Sr.

Derek Gunter Sr., age 43 of Riverside, Ohio passed away unexpectedly on December 5, 2024. He was born September 1, 1981 in Dayton, Ohio son of Lisa and Steve.

Derek has been a nurse for 14 years and he was passionate about helping those battling drug and alcohol addiction, with the help of his good friends Bill, Monica, and Blake. Dereks most prized possessions was his wife, kids, family, friends, and basketball community. He took pride in being the director of the Mad River Select Basketball Program and the Dayton Vipers Elite Program. He had a passion for He-Man. He loved spending his Monday nights at Roosters with his family, watching WWE Wrestling, and spending countless hours on the basketball court. We will miss his ear pulling, toe popping, little squirrel giving, selfie taking, chicken wing eating, arm punching, most loving caring self. Derek will be deeply missed by all who had the honor of knowing him. 

Derek was preceded in death by his mother, Lisa; grandparents, Bee and Paul; aunt Kim; nephew, Oliver; and best friend Jack.

He is survived by his wife of 24 years, Jenny; children, Derek Jr. (Karleigh), Haylee, and Brynlee; father, Steve; brother and best friend, Brandon (Candice); sister in law, Jess (JJ); inlaws, Rick and JayAnn; grandparents, Sharon and Bill, Bonnie and Demas; aunts, Paula (Mike) and Michelle (Bryan); uncle, Jeff (Robyn); sisters, Shanelle, Heather, and Stephanie; nieces, Ali, Layla, and Lily; nephews, Brody, Maverick, Maddixx, Van, and Jaxson; special friends, Mills, Fritz, and Stogs; and many other important friends and family; as well as his dogs, Mia, Mazee, Bleu, and Remy.

A visitation will be held on Wednesday, December 11, 2024 from 3-8pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4104 Needmore Road, Dayton, Ohio 45424. A funeral service will be held on Thursday, December 12, 2024 at 2pm also at the funeral home. Grandfather Bill Miller will be officiating services. 

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made in Derek's honor to Stebbins High School Athletics Department.

Per the family requests, Derek was a man known for his sports apparel. Please wear your sports team clothing. They prefer no black formal clothing.
