David W. Johnson

November 13, 1963 — July 5, 2024

Dayton

David W. Johnson, passed away surrounded by the love of his family, on Friday, July 5, 2024. David is survived by his beloved wife of thirty-seven years, Barb J (nee Gutman); his son, Luke Johnson; his daughter and son-in-law, Afton and Nick Direnzi; and his grandchildren, Isaac and Marcus Direnzi. He is also survived by his brother, Danny and his wife Samantha Johnson. His mother-in-law, Rose Gutman; three sisters-in-law, Dottie Gutman, Ann Gutman, Donna Gard and her husband Larry Gard; and one brother-in-law, Bill Gutman and his wife Sue Gutman; as well as several cherished nieces, nephews, friends and colleagues.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Elbert and Lois Johnson (nee King); as well as his father-in-law, John Gutman.

Dave grew up in east Dayton, where he enjoyed skateboarding, target shooting and fishing. Dave graduated Belmont High School in 1982. He was voted Friendliest by his graduating class and was a member of the 1982 Prom Court. He earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology from Capitol University, a Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Dayton, and was an IT professional who continued to take post graduate courses all while working full time and caring for his family.

Dave was a City of Dayton employee for thirty-seven years where he served in a variety of departments over the years, most recently as an IT Supervisor. He enjoyed his time as a member of the DATV Board. He was dedicated in his work and always strove for excellence. He was the “go-to” guy for answers and advice. However, he would say his greatest accomplishment during his career was meeting his wife when they worked together at Gem Savings Bank.

Dave was an avid sci-fi and comic fan. In his career he led like Captain Kirk and at home he was Superman. He was committed to his family’s well-being and happiness. He made simple adventures into lasting memories like waiting in line for the new Marvel movie releases. He enjoyed breakfasts with his wife, taking his son to Dayton Dragons games, traveling with his daughter and son-in-law and spending time with his grandsons, always ready with a cookie or a Coke.

Be sure to remember him when you raise a glass of Maker’s Mark, you see someone in a fun graphic tee and ball cap, when you watch a cult classic or when you hear a classic rock or heavy metal song on the radio. He was well loved, respected and will be greatly missed.
