David Louis Kouns, age 88, of Dayton, Ohio, passed away peacefully on September 13, 2025, at 9:08 a.m., surrounded by his loving family. He was born on December 7, 1936, in Ashland, Kentucky, to the late John and Peggy Kouns.
David was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Jimmy, Mick, Bud and sister, Peggy Lou; his beloved sons, David and Darrell; and his grandson, Brian.
He is survived by his devoted wife of 70 years, Janet Kouns; his daughters, Anita (Jim) Ruja and Carolyn (Kevin) O'Mara; 8 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren. Among them, his cherished granddaughter, Sonya (Will) Parries, who lovingly cared for him and was like a daughter. He also leaves behind his cherished cat, Ruby.
Growing up in Ashland, Kentucky, David discovered a lifelong love for baseball. After proudly serving his country for three years in the U.S. Army, he moved to Dayton, Ohio, where he dedicated 35 years as a faithful postman delivering mail to his community.
Sports remained his passion throughout his life. David played baseball, softball, and volleyball in numerous leagues and, after retirement, continued to compete in senior athletic events. His talent and dedication took him and Janet all over the country. To participate in multiple Senior Olympics. He was honored with induction into the Dayton Senior Hall of Fame in 2014.
David's life was defined by his love for family, his devotion to his community, and his joy in sports. He will be remembered for his kindness, his playful spirit, and his unwavering strength.
He will be missed dearly and will forever remain in our hearts.
Memorial Donations may be made to Hospice of Dayton in David's honor.
A Visitation will be held Friday, September 19, 2025 from 12:00 pm to 1:00 pm with a Service at 1:00 pm with his grandson, Chaplain Darrell Hornback officiating at Newcomer Funeral Home - Beavercreek Chapel (3380 Dayton-Xenia Road, Beavercreek, Ohio 45432). David will be laid to rest at Mt. Zion Park Cemetery following the service.
