Fairborn

David Michael Carlton, known fondly as Dave, passed away on March 4, 2025, in Fairborn, Ohio, at the age of 82.

Born on November 11, 1942, in Dayton, Ohio, Dave grew up with a deep appreciation for learning and adventure. He graduated from Fairmont West High School before continuing hi education at the University of Dayton. His thirst for knowledge remained a defining trait throughout his life, fueling his love for history and his enjoyment of reading.

Dave proudly served his country in the Navy during the Vietnam War. His patriotism was evident not only in his service, but also in the way he carried himself throughout his life. He had a deep admiration and respect for those who served and for the values he held dear. A man of many interests, Dave found joy in nature. He loved watching shows about wild animals and had a keen eye for appreciating the beauty of nature. Gardening was one of his passions, allowing him to cultivate both plants and a sense of peace in his surroundings. His love for nature extended to family outings to places like the Cincinnati Zoo and Fantasy Farm Amusement Park, where he created cherished memories with those closest to him.

Sports played an important role in Dave's life, particularly Ohio State football. As an usher at home games, he combined his enthusiasm for the sport with his enjoyment of being part of the game day experience. He was also a dedicated supporter of his daughters' activities, encouraging them in sports and marching band with unwavering pride and unconditional love.

Family was at the heart of everything Dave did. He shared many special moments with his family on trips to Kelleys Island, Washington D.C., North Carolina, Texas, and California-journeys that strengthened bonds and created lasting memories. Known for his humor and private nature, he had a way of making those around him feel comfortable while keeping certain aspects of his life close to his heart.

Dave was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Connie Carlton; his parents, Darius and Eleanor Carlton; and his sister Marian Dickas.

He is survived by his daughters Amy Cotter and Julie Carlton (Kathy Cramer); granddaughters Emily Cotter, Erin Cotter, and Ariannah Thompson; grandsons Max Carlton and Jesse Lee; sister Beverly Nevin, as well as many nieces and nephews who will remember him fondly. Dave's legacy lives through the love he shared with family, the knowledge he eagerly pursued, and the laughter he brought into their lives. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.

Following with David's wishes, there will be no services held.

"When I come to the end of my journey

and I travel my last weary mile,

just forget if you can, that I ever frowned

and only remember the smile.

Forget unkind words I have spoken;

remember some good I have done.

Forget that I ever had heartache

and remember I’ve had loads of fun.

Forget that I’ve stumbled and blundered

and sometimes fell by the way.

Remember I have fought some hard

battles and won, ere the close of the day.

Then forget to grieve for my going,

I would not have you sad for a day.

But in summer just gather some flowers

and remember the place where I lay,

and come in the shade of evening

when the sun paints the sky in the west.

Stand for a few moments beside me

and remember only my best."
