Darrell L. Paxson, 80, of Dayton, passed away July 31, 2017. Darrell was born in Dayton, Ohio on November 9, 1936 to the late Earl and Emma Paxson. Darrell retired from General Motors after 27 years of service. He was a proud veteran of the United States Air Force.
Darrell was a very versatile and talented man. He could do anything and do it well. At the tender age of 12 he built his own bicycle from parts he found at the junk yard. He joined the Air Force March 17, 1955 where he was an airplane mechanic. He worked on F-89's and 102 Delta Daggers at Kinross AFB near Sault Ste. Marie, MI. He was a crew chief. He achieved the rank of Airman first class in less than 2 years, with time and grade for staff sergeant when he left the Air Force March 16, 1959.
Through the years he worked in various machine shops, was a milk man, an insurance man and even spent time driving semi-trucks cross country. He joined General Motors January 1968 as a tool and die maker.
Darrell loved Harley Davidsons. He was only 16 when he bought his first one and bought his last one in 1988. He was also an accomplished musician. He played bass guitar and sang with various bands in the Dayton area for over 30 years. At one time, he took up wood carving as a hobby, making many beautiful things for himself, his family and his friends. Another hobby was photography. Darrell had many health issues through the years and several surgeries. In spite of that, he accomplished so much.
In addition to his parents, Darrell was preceded in death by his brothers, Earl "Junior" Paxson, Forrest "Bud" Paxson, Willard Paxson, James "Jim" Paxson, Gerry Paxson; and grandson, Joshua Cull.
He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Karen Paxson; sons, Greg (Denise) Paxson, Chris (Jenny) Paxson; daughters, Deborah Cull, Cindy (Daryl) Berger; grandchildren, Chris Cull, Erin (Kelcie) Paxson, Erica Paxson, Chelsea (Steven) Wright, Brandon (Brooke) Berger, Cody Berger, Tori Silvati; great grandchildren, Emma, Joshua, Hooper; brother, Richard Paxson; special sister, Pat Barnes; and several other relatives and special friends.
A visitation will be held from 6pm - 7pm on Thursday, August 3, 2017 at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3380 Dayton-Xenia Road, Beavercreek, where funeral services will begin at 7 pm. Burial will follow at 10 am on Friday, August 4, 2017 at Fairview Cemetery in Belle Center, Ohio.
