Charles Owen Johnson, born July 26, 1958, passed away on July 17, 2026. He leaves behind a legacy of dedication to family, hard work, and an enduring spirit of innovation and kindness that touched the lives of all who knew him.
Charles was the beloved husband of Marilyn Ballmann-Johnson and a devoted father to David (Amity) Johnson, Owen Johnson, Jesus (Martine) Tirado, Dominique (Nicholas) Nickert, Martika Ballmann, and Jevonne Williams; and sister, Lisa (O'Connell) Bull. He was also a cherished grandfather to Benjamin, Sawyer, Ethan, Ian, Cayden, Oliver, Phoenix, Kallarie, Diana, and Riley. Charles was preceded in death by his parents, Owen and Laverne (Ingebretsen) Johnson and son, Timothy Johnson.
A proud graduate of Sinclair Community College, Charles earned his Associate's Degree in Hospitality Management, paving the way for a distinguished career. He dedicated many years as a chef at Bethany Lutheran Village, where his commitment to his craft and the people he worked with was evident in everything he did. Alongside his wife, Marilyn, he undertook home remodeling projects in their community, combining his skills as a tinkerer and craftsman with a love of working with his hands.
Shaped by curiosity and a sense of adventure, Charles was known as a treasure hunter—someone who could find value, beauty, and purpose in the overlooked corners of life. He was the go-to person for anything in need of repair, and he approached every challenge with patience, meticulousness, and a can-do attitude. His interests were as diverse as his talents; he found joy in fishing, gardening, and especially in cheering for the Chicago Cubs during baseball season.
Though accomplished in many areas, Charles always made it clear that what he loved most was his family. He filled his home with warmth and laughter, serving as a guiding presence and a source of unwavering support. To his grandchildren, he was not only a mentor but also a companion in play and discovery. He was especially known for his sense of humor among his family and friends.
Friends and family are invited to honor and remember Charles during visitation on Sunday, July 26, 2026, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m., at Newcomer Funeral Home, Kettering, located at 3940 Kettering Blvd, Kettering, OH 45439. A Celebration of Life will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the same location.
