Charles Eugene Purcell, a devoted telecommunications specialist, musician, and U.S. Air Force veteran, passed away on May 31, 2026, in Dayton, Ohio. Born on August 7, 1954, in Dayton, Charlie lived a life marked by loyalty, generosity, and a deep connection to music and community.
A proud graduate of Beavercreek High School in 1972, Charlie’s passion for radio broadcasting led him to pursue college credits at Wright State University. His calling to serve his country saw him join the U.S. Air Force, where he worked as a telecommunications specialist until his medical discharge. Following his military service, he continued his career in telecommunications with the L.M. Berry Company and other enterprises, applying his expertise with dedication.
Music was a cornerstone of Charlie’s life from a young age. He played tuba in the Beavercreek High School band, demonstrating early talent and commitment. He went on to play the first tuba for the Miller’s Blackhawks Musical Corps of Dayton, Ohio. Through this ensemble, Charlie traveled to state and national competitions, and participated in distinguished parades including the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Indy 500, and the Holland Tulip Festival in Michigan, leaving an indelible mark wherever they performed.
Expanding his musical repertoire, Charlie learned to play the contrabass bugle with the Blue Rock Drum and Bugle Corps based in Wilmington, Delaware. His involvement took him across the United States, competing alongside other elite drum and bugle corps. At the King Biscuit Blues Festival in Helena, Arkansas, Charlie’s love for music and community shone through as he hosted a live music stage for ten years, fostering a vibrant atmosphere for blues enthusiasts. Additionally he shared his passion for music by hosting on local airwaves an oldies show that resonated with listeners as DJ “Gene-Charles.
Charlie is lovingly remembered by his sister, Judith Purcell Humphrys of Chicago, and her husband Edward Humphrys. His family circle also includes cherished nephews and nieces: Franklin Andrew Humphrys of Columbus, Ohio, and Eleanor Anne Humphrys of Chicago. He was preceded in death by his parents, Forrest Eugene Purcell and Alice Crist Purcell. Charles leaves behind numerous cousins, including special cousin Dwain Purcell.
Throughout his life, Charles Eugene Purcell demonstrated unwavering loyalty and generosity to his family, friends, and the communities he touched. Charles met many special friends in the music industry, including Blues artists E.G. McDaniel and Noah Wotherspoon. His contributions to music, military service, and telecommunications reflect a man who dedicated himself not only to his craft but to enriching the lives of those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, and his legacy will endure through the music he played and the lives he impacted.
