Bonita Kay Bruce

May 26, 1961 — April 22, 2025

Dayton

Bonita Kay Bruce, a radiant spirit whose laughter illuminated the lives of those around her, passed away on April 22, 2025, in her cherished hometown of Dayton, Ohio, where she was born on May 26, 1961. A proud graduate of Xenia High School, Class of 1979, Bonita pursued her passion for learning, earning a Bachelor of Science degree from Central State University and subsequently attaining her Master of Business Degree from Indiana Wesleyan University.

Throughout her beloved career, Bonita dedicated herself to empowering others through knowledge, teaching Microsoft Word classes and providing invaluable tutoring to countless students. Her bubbly and outgoing personality, combined with her feisty demeanor and big sense of humor, endeared her to everyone fortunate enough to cross her path. Bonita was a devoted and empathetic individual, always standing up for herself and those she loved with fierce determination.

In the tapestry of her life, Bonita wove myriad interests and joys, including her passion for playing Bingo and the companionship of her beloved dog, Loki, whom she affectionately referred to as her only son. Bonita's heart was vast, encompassing not only her hobbies but also a deep love for her family and friends.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Nakia Steed and Taylor Lentz, and her cherished grandchildren, Jayden, Denashia, and Daquan. Bonita's legacy extends to her siblings: Margaret (the late Willie) Atkinson, Dr. Barbara (the late Don) Newell, Gay Steed, Tyrone "Tony" Nared, Chitra Steed, and her "favorite baby sister," Cleo Phillips. Bonita also shared a special bond with her companion, Paul Wheat, and leaves behind many loving nieces, nephews, family members, and friends who will forever hold her memory close to their hearts.

While Bonita was preceded in death by her parents, Thurman L. Steed and Elaine Nared, her husband, Gale Bruce, and her brother, Thurman L. Steed III, her vibrant spirit and unyielding love will linger as a beacon of light for all who knew her. As she journeys to be with the Lord, we celebrate the remarkable life of Bonita Kay Bruce—a life imbued with joy, laughter, and an unwavering devotion to family and friends. She will be profoundly missed and cherished for eternity.

"I Am Free...

Don’t grieve for me, for now I’m free.

I’m following the path God laid for me.

I took his hand when I heard him call.

I turned my back and left it all.

I could not stay another day.

To laugh, to love, to work or play.

Tasks left undone must stay that way.

I found that peace at close of day.

If my parting has left a void,

then fill it with remembered joy.

A friendship shared, a laugh, a kiss,

ah yes these things I too will miss.

Be not burdened with times of sorrow.

I wish you the sunshine of tomorrow.

My life has been full, I’ve savored much.

Good friends, good times, a loved ones touch.

Perhaps my time seemed all too brief

don’t lengthen it now with undue grief.

Lift up your hearts and share with me.

God wanted me now; He set me free."
