Betty Lee Schaut, a treasured figure known affectionately as Mimim and Mimmy by her grandchildren, passed away peacefully, surrounded by family, on May 6, 2026, at Hospice of Dayton. Born on January 25, 1939, in Raven, Virginia, Betty lived a life full of warmth, love, and vibrant personality leaving an indelible mark on all who had the honor to know her.

Betty retired from a dedicated career with Dayton Public Schools, where she imparted knowledge and inspiration to countless students. Beyond her professional life, she was most proud of her family, especially her grandchildren, who called her by endearing nicknames that reflected the close bonds she cherished.

She will be fondly remembered for her infectious laugh and as the matriarch of her family-a role she embraced with passion and grace. Betty was a fiesty and honest woman, often the life of the party. She carried herself with a beauty highlighted by her radiant smile and distinctive red lipstick, a trademark she wore with pride. Even when words were unspoken, her expressive face communicated volumes to those who knew her well.

A true foodie at heart, Betty’s signature phrase, “let’s get a little bite to eat,” echoed her love for dining out and savoring a fresh cup of coffee. These simple pleasures brought her joy and were a part of the many memories cherished by her family and friends.

Betty was preceded in death by her first husband, Phillip Edward Elswick, and is survived by her devoted husband, Josef Schaut; her loving sisters, Clara Bilbrey and Connie (Vandy) Deskins; and her sons, Phillip Wayne Elswick, Barry Lee Elswick, and Joe (Megen) Elswick. Her legacy continues through her grandchildren, Rachel Mayberry, Ashley (Cory) Thomas, Ryan Lee (Michelle) Elswick, Ranay Dawn (Nick) Elswick, Mindy Russo, Cheyan (Rob) Johnson, and Adrian (Sophie) Elswick, as well as her beloved great-grandchildren, Annabelle, Alexis, Lilly, Kayann, Braxton, Claire, Eleanor, Hailey, Kelsey Jo, and Lila Lee “Buggie.” She is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and friends, including her daughter-in-law, Lesa Holbrook and special friend, Bryon Hamilton.

Betty was preceded in death by her cherished parents, Clarence Lee and Virginia Edna Slate; her sister, Peggy (Grat “Happy”) Whited; her brother, Donald “Buck” (Margaret Ann) Slate; her brother-in-law, Johnny Bilbrey; and several nieces and nephews.

Her family and friends will remember Betty Schaut not only for the hearty laughs and spirited personality but also for her unwavering honesty, her role as a guiding force within her family, and the genuine love she extended to all around her. Betty’s memory will continue to inspire and bring comfort to those who were fortunate to share in her life.

The family would like to extend a special "thank you" to Ohio's Hospice of Dayton for their compassion and care.

A Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.
