Berman E. Layer, a beloved figure in the Miamisburg community, passed away peacefully on October 20, 2025, at Kettering Hospital Main Campus. He was born on September 16, 1923, in Greenville, Ohio, and lived a remarkable life dedicated to service, family, and a passion for the outdoors.
Berman was the proud owner and operator of Layer Electric for an impressive 77 years, a testament to his dedication and skill in his trade. His educational journey led him to earn a Bachelor’s Degree from Ohio State University, where he developed a lifelong enthusiasm for the university's football team, maintaining season tickets and attending games well into his 90s.
A World War II Veteran, Berman served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers, contributing to efforts in the European Theater. His experiences during the war shaped his worldview and sparked a deep appreciation for travel, particularly fond memories of Switzerland.
Berman was known not only for his professional accomplishments but also for his vibrant personality. An avid gardener and fisherman, he found joy in nature and the company of friends and family. He embraced life with vigor, always thriving on being busy and active in his community. His numerous contributions included being a long-time member of Tawasi, a local businessmen's group, and serving on various boards including the Park Board and the RTA, as well as volunteering as a tour guide at Cox Arboretum. One of Berman's greatest contributions to his community was serving for 15 years as a Miami-Township Trustee.
Berman was a dedicated Sunday School teacher and a board member at his church, reflecting his commitment to faith and community service. His proudest accomplishments include achieving the rank of Eagle Scout with the Boy Scouts of America, a distinction he cherished throughout his life.
Berman is survived by his loving wife of 81 years, Violet Layer; son, Timothy Brian (Charla) Layer; two granddaughters, Casey D. (Douglas) Flournoy and Sara R. (Lee) Hammond; grandson, Ryan M. (Lindsey) Pease; and great-grandchildren, Vincent, Reece, Rylin, Natalie, Kinsley, Darla, Maddox, Lyluxe, Harper, Fennox, and Emmryx. His legacy also lives on through numerous family members and friends who were deeply touched by his kindness and generosity.
He is preceded in death by his father, Henry J. Layer; mother, Mary Layer; and sister, Lucy J (Byron "Sam") Jacoby.
A memorial service to honor Berman E. Layer's remarkable life will be held on October 28, 2025, at Parkview Church, located at 3713 Benner Rd, Miamisburg, OH. The service will begin at 1:00 PM, with a gathering to follow at 2:00 PM. His family encourages all who knew him to join in celebrating his life and legacy, reflecting on the warmth and joy he brought to every encounter.
