Barrie Jay Mellinger

Barrie Jay Mellinger, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully on August 7, 2026, in Huber Heights, Ohio. Born on May 4, 1941, in Wausau, Wisconsin, Barrie’s 85 years were marked by a deep commitment to his family, his work ethic, and the many joys of life.

He proudly served in the US Army, an experience that shaped his sense of duty and responsibility throughout his life. Following his service, Barrie established a long and dedicated career as a commercial industrial painter, working with the International Painters & Allied Trades (IUPAT) and for various painting contractors until his well-deserved retirement. He approached his work with thoroughness and integrity, exemplifying, "if you're going to do it, do it right"—Barrie was never one to be found idle and always found purpose in staying active and engaged.

On June 3, 1967, Barrie married the love of his life, Charlene. Together, they shared nearly sixty years of companionship, laughter, and unwavering devotion. Their union was blessed with two children, Tami and Todd. As a grandfather to Ahna Marie Merlano, Brett Jay Mellinger, and Bryce Lee Mellinger, and a great-grandfather to Daniel Jay Merlano, Donatello Raphael Merlano, and Danisea Reitz, Barrie’s legacy is reflected in the generations he loved. His guidance, wisdom, and the example he set will be cherished memories for his family.

Barrie's interests and talents extended far beyond his profession. He had a lifelong passion for classic cars, spending countless hours restoring and admiring their beauty. More than a pastime, classic car shows and weekly Cruise-Ins became a lively part of his social life, where he delighted in recounting stories and sharing in the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts. NASCAR Sundays were a fixture in Barrie’s home, as he watched every week with enthusiasm and pizza. 

A consummate outdoorsman, Barrie found peace and pleasure in hunting and fishing, often organizing outings with his family where laughter and stories flowed. At home, his daughter remembers his cooking—his skill at the grill and in the kitchen made family gatherings all the more memorable. Barrie’s Basset Hounds and English Springer Spaniels were cherished companions, always at his side, bringing him comfort and joy.

Though he could strike up a conversation with anyone and was remarkably outgoing, there was never a doubt where Barrie's priorities lay. He adored his family and never hesitated to impart wisdom with directness and sincerity. Friends and neighbors could often find him at a local diner, gathering with “the guys” each morning over coffee, conversation, and the simple pleasure of company.

Barrie is survived by his devoted wife, Charlene; his daughter, Tami (David) Mellinger and son, Todd Mellinger; his grandchildren, Ahna (Daniel) Marie Merlano, Brett Jay Mellinger, and Bryce Lee Mellinger; and his great-grandchildren, Daniel Jay Merlano, Donatello Raphael Merlano, and Danisea Reitz.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Paul Riblet and Lula Maxine (Shoemaker) Mellinger; twin sister, Bonnie Mae and older sister, Yvonne.

Barrie’s presence was a source of strength for all who knew him. His candor, steadfastness, and energy leave a lasting imprint on the hearts of his family and community.

His life will be remembered with love, gratitude, and respect by all those whose lives he touched.
