Arlene M. Crawford, née Burgulis, a nurse, anesthetist, and devoted mother/ grandmother passed away on May 5, 2026. Born on November 9, 1941, in Dayton, Ohio.
Arlene graduated from Julienne High School in 1959 before advancing to St. Elizabeth Hospital Nursing School, where she earned her credentials in 1962. She then attended the Medical College of Charleston, where she became a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) in 1971.
Outside her professional life, Arlene enjoyed searching for antiques, cultivating her garden, and expressing her creativity through crafting. Her baking was legendary, especially during the holiday season, where her Christmas cookies and bourbon fruitcake were beloved treats to family and friends.
After leaving full-time work, she continued by teaching nursing part-time while managing the billing for Marty’s work. She volunteered significant time supporting the girls through Girl Scouts, band, and other school activities. She also volunteered at the YWCA, art guild, garden club, and her church.
Arlene was preceded in death by her devoted husband, O. Martin Crawford, whose memory she held close; her beloved mother, Elizabeth Burgulis; and her father, George Burgulis.
She leaves behind a devoted family who will carry forward her memory. Her daughters, Sharon Crawford Young and Karen Crawford, continue to honor her spirit; alongside Sharon’s husband, Kenzie Young, and their son, Charlie Young, who was the pride of her later years. Arlene is also remembered with affection by her brother, G. Thomas Burgulis, and her sister-in-law, Lana Burgulis.
Arlene’s presence enriched the lives of those around her, and she will be deeply missed. Her family invites all who knew her to remember a woman whose heart was as generous as her hands were skilled, and whose legacy will live on through the stories and traditions she lovingly shared.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to your favorite charity in her memory. Memorial Mass to be scheduled.
