Arita Anne Moats, born on November 2, 1945, in Columbus, Ohio, passed away peacefully on June 1, 2026, in Dayton, Ohio, surrounded by her loving family. She was a devoted educator, beloved family member, and cherished friend, whose presence will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Arita devoted 35 years of her life to teaching, inspiring countless young minds as a third and fourth-grade teacher at Beverly Gardens and Saville Elementary schools. Her commitment to education was rooted in a profound passion for learning and nurturing children’s growth. A proud graduate of Wright State University, she earned both her bachelor's and master’s degrees in education, credentials that underscored her dedication to her profession and to the students she served so well.
Characterized by those close to her as fiery, loyal, and ornery, Arita was affectionately described as "a hard shell with a soft center." Those fortunate enough to be part of her inner circle knew beyond doubt that they were important to her. Her steadfast love and fierce loyalty touched the lives of many, painting a picture of a woman who balanced strength and tenderness with grace.
Her interests reflected a vibrant and spirited personality. Arita found joy in reading, coloring, and playing cards—especially euchre and bunko. She delighted in puzzles, though she kept them modest in size with no more than 500 pieces. She cherished dining with friends, traveling, online shopping, and had an enduring fondness for peanut M&M’s, small pleasures that brightened her days.
The proudest accomplishments of her life were her family and friends, embodying the rich relationships she nurtured over the years. She leaves behind her sister Marilyn VanMeter; nephew DJ Haines and his wife Julie; great niece Haley; great nephews Dylan and Justin; her dearest friend Pat Smith; “Ohio Daughter” Danielle Jett and her husband Jeff; she was lovingly known as “Granny Moats” to Danielle and Jeff's children, Luke and Chloe. Arita was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Virginia Moats.
Friends and community members are invited to honor Arita's memory at a visitation held on June 10, 2026, from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM at Newcomer Funeral Home in Beavercreek, Ohio. This will be followed by a memorial service at the same location at 4:00 PM.
