Alexis L. Shurte

Alexis “Lexie” Shurte, an amazing daughter, wife, mother, "Ghee" (grandmother), and friend passed peacefully on September 22nd at Beavercreek Acute Care after a short illness. She was surrounded by family and love. She was born September 21, 1938 during a visit to her grandparent's farm in KY but grew up in East Dayton. She was a much-loved only child of Elmer and Ethel Cooper. Both have now passed along with many cherished aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. She is survived by daughter Lori (Penny), son Matt (Jenny), and beloved grandchildren, Rachael (Andrew), Max, and Parker.

She graduated from Wilbur Wright High School and was a member of/married in Belmont United Methodist Church. At church, she met the perfect match for her shyness - her wickedly outgoing husband, David Shurte. They enjoyed dancing, art center parties, entertaining friends and just hanging out at home.

She started working at Scott Industrial Systems for Mr. & Mrs. Scott when she was 17 and retired after 54 years as an Executive Secretary. She taught her children Lori and Matt what hard work, dedication, attention to details, and loyalty meant in in a job.

Her Mom was her Best Friend and they shared an enormous love of cooking, gardening, and shopping for clothes, shoes, and dishes. Lexie was a voracious reader of spy/adventure fiction and instilled an exceptionally strong love of reading and learning to her children. She could answer almost any question re: family history, cooking, plants, animals, nature in general, and Disney movies. She grew up with many different dogs (who were considered family and not just pets) but finally landed on miniature and toy poodles. She was recently proceeded in death by her shadow, Teddy. Her other beloved boy, Marbles, will be cared for by Lori and Penny.

Lexie loved collecting Teddy Bears and every gadget, dish, cookbook, and table setting related to cooking. She enjoyed setting beautiful tables on holidays and putting out a spread of delicious and eye-catching food. She was a fantastic cook and learned everything she could to support her vegetarian daughter (Lori) and gluten-free son (Matt). She was a devoted mother and loved her family more than anything. She loved her children and grandchildren and often talked about them, always thrilled to see them.

Lexie’s family has felt very blessed to have so many wonderful friends, neighbors, and caregivers to lean on for support during this time. She will be/is terribly missed by all.

Funeral service will be held at 12:30 PM on Tuesday, September 29, 2026, at Newcomer Funeral Home in Centerville. Visitation will be held the night prior on Monday from 5 PM to 7 PM at the funeral home. Lexie will be laid to rest at Miami Valley Memory Gardens.
