Funeral Homes and Cremations in Dayton, OH
Newcomer Funeral Homes have served Dayton families since our first chapel opened in 1996 in Kettering. Fourth-generation funeral director Ren Newcomer and his wife Theresa believed that funeral costs in Dayton were simply too high, and knew that there was a better way. They built our North Dayton chapel in 2001, our Beavercreek chapel in 2008, and opened our Centerville chapel in 2019. Ren and Theresa's children Maggie and John continue the tradition of providing quality funeral service at a fair price that has guided the family for generations.

FAQ's about Funeral Homes and Cremations in Dayton
Cremation FAQ's
Can there be a viewing before cremation?
Yes. Seeing a loved one can be an important part of the grieving process for many people, so a public visitation or private family viewing can absolutely take place before cremation.
Can family be present during the cremation?
Yes. We invite families to participate as much as they would like. A witnessed cremation provides an experience very similar to a burial, when some families choose to watch the casket be lowered into the ground. Family and friends can stand right alongside the funeral director and crematory operator as their loved one’s body is placed respectfully into the crematory. Generally, families do not stay for the entire process, but this can be an option if you prefer.
How does cremation work?
Cremation involves the process of reducing the body to ashes. Afterwards, the remains are returned to the family. A funeral service can be held before cremation, with your loved one's body present in a casket. Or, a memorial service may be held after cremation, with the cremated remains present in an urn.
How do I know that I am getting my loved one back in the urn?
Multiple steps are taken at our funeral home and the crematory to maintain an individual’s personal identity throughout the cremation process. An identification card is placed with them the moment they are brought into our care. Multiple parties review all cremation paperwork and permits prior to cremation. A numbered stainless steel identification tag is placed with your loved one before cremation, and stays with the remains when they are placed inside the urn. When it is time to return the remains to the family, we will release them only to an authorized party, recording that person's name in our records to further ensure the integrity of the process. You can have confidence that your loved one will be cared for with dignity and respect, and their personal identity will be maintained every step of the way.
What should I do with the cremated remains?
If you choose cremation, there are many options for what to do with the ashes:
- Scattering: Many people choose to scatter the ashes in a location that had significance to the deceased, such as a favorite park, beach, or nature spot.
- Keepsake urns: Some families choose to keep a portion of the ashes in a special urn or piece of jewelry.
- Interment: Ashes can be interred in a family plot or at a cemetery, either in a niche or within a memorial garden.
- Other creative options: There are many creative options for commemorating the deceased, including turning ashes into diamonds or using them to create a memorial reef.
Where can ashes be legally scattered?
There are restrictions around where cremated remains can be scattered. If you have a place in mind, check with local municipalities or your funeral director for assistance.

Preplanning FAQ's
What is preplanning and is it necessary?
Preplanning allows individuals to make their own funeral arrangements in advance. While it is not required, it can ease the burden on loved ones and ensure that personal wishes are honored. Many families find comfort in knowing these decisions have already been made.
My family member already arranged their services at another funeral home. Can I transfer them to you?
Yes. You can transfer any prearranged funeral or cremation plan from one funeral home to another at any time. If the arrangements were prepaid, and the funds are more than what the services cost at our funeral home, we would refund the difference to the family.
Why should I preplan my funeral?
Preplanning offers several benefits:
- Control and personalization: You can ensure that your funeral reflects your personal preferences and values.
- Financial relief: Preplanning can help lock in today's prices for future services, potentially saving money.
- Peace of mind: Knowing that your arrangements are in place can bring comfort to you and your family.
- Reducing stress for loved ones: Your family won’t have to make difficult decisions during a time of grief.
What kinds of things can be preplanned?
Many aspects of your services can be preplanned. These include:
- Type of service: Decide on what kind of service you want to have.
- Burial or cremation: Choose whether you want to be buried or cremated and select a cemetery plot or urn if applicable.
- Service specifics: Plan details such as readings, music, and who will officiate.
- Personal touches: Include any personal preferences like flower arrangements, special mementos, or attire.
- Financial arrangements: Set aside funds or take out a funeral insurance policy to cover costs.
Can I change my plans later?
Yes, preplanning is flexible. You can update your plans as your preferences or circumstances change. It’s important to keep your plans updated and communicate any changes to your family and the funeral home.
How do I ensure my family knows about these arrangements?
After preplanning, inform your family about your decisions and where the documents are stored. This can be in the form of a written document, a pre-need contract with a funeral home, or even a discussion with your loved ones. Keeping them informed will ensure they can easily access and follow your wishes when the time comes.
