He was born on August 9, 1933 to Herbert and LaVeda (McAvoy) Ackerman in Dayton, OH.
Jim was a Korean War Veteran and POW. He later worked as a millwright for NCR, a security guard for GM, then a custodian for West Carrollton High School.
He was a member of VFW Post 3438 in West Carrollton, American Legion, and AMVETS.
Jim is survived by his loving children, Kimberly A. (Matt) Esmail, Michael J. (Tammy) Ackerman, Steven T. Ackerman, David W. (Kathy Ison) Ackerman, Suzanne K. (David Barnes) Miller; brother, Howard (Mary) Ackerman; numerous nieces, nephews, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and grand-dogs.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert W. and Lavetta M. Ackerman; and brother, Donald (Barbara) Ackerman.
Visitation will be held Thursday, February 28, 2019, from 6:00-8:00 pm at Newcomer South Chapel in Kettering.
Memorial Services will be held Friday, March 1, 2019 at 1:00 pm.
Interment will immediately follow at Dayton National Cemetery.
Memorials are suggested to VFW Post 3438.
