Ralph Lawrence Shields, age 98 of Kettering, passed away Tuesday, January 8, 2019 at Suites of Walnut Creek. He was born January 5, 1921 in Milford, Ohio to the late Forrest Samuel and Ellen Emma (Lawrence) Shields.
In addition to his parents, Ralph was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Pauline J. (Judd) Shields and seven siblings.
He is survived by his children, Janet Powell, Gary (Nikita) Shields and Keith (Patricia) Shields; eight grandchildren and seven great grandchildren; a sister, Mildred Pearman as well as numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.
As a young man, Ralph helped care for his younger siblings as his mother lost her life during child birth. He later joined the United States Navy when he came of age and honorably served as a gunner’s mate 2nd class during WWII earning 2 Bronze Stars. Ralph settled in Dayton following his discharge and began work as a machinist. He finally began his life-long career at Frigidaire as an appliance repairman and retired with about 30 years of service. Ralph and his wife, Pauline were members of a local square dance group, travelled with the US Navy LST 681 Veteran travel group and belonged to Fairhaven Christian Church, Centerville. In his spare time he enjoyed fishing, vegetable gardening, RV travel and caring for his property. Ralph will always be remembered for his honesty, direct approach, knowledge, success, achievements and as “Grandpa Marchester”.
Family will receive guests from 1:30-2:30 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home, Kettering. A funeral ceremony will begin at 2:30 also at the funeral home on Tuesday and officiated by Pastor Jim Futrell. Procession to Miami Valley Memory Gardens, Centerville for burial with military honors will conclude services. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of a donor’s choice in Ralph’s memory.
