In Memory Of
Nina Jean Barnes
1941 - 2018

On December 7, 2018, God called his angel Nina Jean Barnes home. She was born in Kenton, KY on June 29, 1941 and spent much of her life in Dayton, Ohio. She passed away at the age of 77 in San Antonio, TX.

The daughter of the late Rev. Morris E. Barnes and Mary Bates, and Daily Barnes (stepmother), she was also preceded in death by her daughter, Deborah Slaughter; sons, Iran Smith and Eugene Barnes; grandmother, Georgia Darden; brothers, Robert Bates and James Barnes; and grandson, Andre Stone.

Nina is survived by her brothers, Theodore Hale (Alabama), Edwin Barnes (Tennessee) and Donald Barnes (Ohio), and sister Ada Staten (Ohio). She leaves to cherish her memories; her daughters, Mary Snow (Perry) and Dolores Boyd of San Antonio, TX, and Della Smith (Massachusetts) and son Willie Smith (Carol) of Florida; sisters-in-law, Mary Bogan and Ann Barnes, both of Ohio; her beloved 19 grandchildren; 35 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of family and friends.

Nina loved helping with many organizations. She arranged Bible Study and Prayer Meetings with her neighbors, she happily volunteered her services. Nina was the matriarch of her family, she truly believed that “the family that prays together, stays together,” and she lived it by arranging monthly conference calls for family prayer.
She enjoyed reading, singing, and spending time with her grandchildren and watching movies while eating a bag of popcorn. Traveling and swimming were also some of her favorite hobbies, and she believed in staying active. She will be most remembered for being a diva. Nina kept her hair styled in the latest trends, and her makeup was always perfect, and she wore outfits that could compete with movie stars. Nina took pride in looking her best, and that didn’t change even as she began to get sick, her fashion remained intact.

Above all, Nina placed God first, in her early years she was a member of Greater Damascus Missionary Baptist Church were her father was the Founding Pastor. In her final years, she was a faithful member of Resurrection Baptist Church in San Antonio, TX. There you would see her almost every Sunday, because she would not let the trials of life get her down. Nina fought a good fight and she finished the race. We loved her, but God loves her more, and He said no more pain, no more suffering and no more tears, come on home and be at peace. Nina was loved by many and will be sorely missed.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2018 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Newcomer North Chapel (4104 Needmore Rd., Dayton, Ohio 45424). A Funeral Service will begin at 10:30 am. Burial will follow in West Memory Gardens.
