Mary Agnes Lipscomb
1934 - 2018

Mary A. Lipscomb, age 83 of Xenia, OH passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 8, 2018 at Greene Memorial Hospital. She was born September 18, 1934 in St. Louis, Missouri to William Clyde Wyatt and Mary Emily Saunders McConnico. She married Richard John Lipscomb on January 4, 1958 in Lansing, Michigan.

Mary attended Sumner High School in St. Louis, Missouri. She graduated from West Virginia State College with a degree in Sociology. Mary also earned a Master’s Degree in Educational Psychology from Michigan State University. Mary was initiated into Nu Chapter, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority in 1954 at West Virginia State College.

Mary moved to Lansing, Michigan in 1957 to work at Lincoln School/Lincoln Community Center as a Girls Worker. She began working for Ingham County Dept. of Social Welfare as a Caseworker. From there she became a Community School Coordinator and soon thereafter worked for the Head Start Program. For about one year, Mary returned to social work before pursuing her path as an educator and administrator with Lansing School District. Her first teaching position was with Michigan Avenue School where she touched the lives of students as well as parents. During her time at Michigan Avenue she was involved with the Girl Scout Program and served as the school’s Principal until 1976. Mary moved on to become the Principal at Bingham Elementary as well as Pleasant View from which she retired in1994. After retirement Mary gave her time as a volunteer mentor to young educators and administrators, she also spent time assisting students with class work.

Mary was a sophisticated world traveler with many spheres of interests. She enjoyed all facets of the arts: opera, jazz, ballet, theatre productions, museums and culturally specific art such as African and African-American art. She was an avid reader and took pleasure sharing her love of books and interests with others. Mary also pursued her culinary skills and was an excellent cook and baker. As part of her travels, Mary sought to gain a better understanding of her family history which took her all over the United States. During this time she became a founding member of the Lansing Area African American Genealogy Society (LAAAGS). Other interests Mary enjoyed were antiques, sewing, crocheting, needle point, gardening and other forms of arts and crafts.

Aggie, as most people knew her was a Spartan Fan, particularly MSU Football. She enjoyed preparing treats to share at tailgate gatherings with family and friends. In Lansing, Aggie found pleasure giving back to the community both individually and thru social organizations she was a part. Those groups include; Chums, Red Hat Ladies, Les Meres-Debutantes and Lansing Area Retirees Group. Community outreach played a big part in Aggie’s life which allowed her to work with Black Child and Family Institute as well as Nova House thru AKA Sorority. Aggie continued being active in the community when she moved to Xenia, Ohio. She joined Altrusa International and assisted with various community service projects including sending food boxes to military families in Afghanistan, sending supplies to teachers of Xenia Schools, and providing meals at The Caring Place. Aggie assisted the Central State University History Club with developing student programs and later was a presenter of genealogy. Aggie also became active with Rho Omega Chapter of AKA.

Mary is survived by her loving children Michael J. Lipscomb, Robin M. Lipscomb(John) Stanford, Richard W. Lipscomb and Meredith Lipscomb(Aaron Ramsey); grandchildren, Nicholas Lipscomb, Alexis Harris, Ashley M. Lipscomb, Nia Joy Stanford, Javon Ramsey and Jayden Christopher Wyatt Ramsey; The Shannon family, Willie, Kay, Sharese, JR and other close family and friends. She is preceded in death by husband Richard J. Lipscomb and her parents.

Her many years of service to students, staff and families in the community helped make it a better place for students to get their education. There are many individuals in the community, state, and the nation who Aggie has helped in one way or another, directly and indirectly, become better citizens because of the things she did for them.

We are blessed and proud to call Mary A. Lipscomb our Mom.

A graveside service will be held on Friday, September 28, 2018 at 1:00pm at St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery, 2520 W Willow St, Lansing, MI 48917.
